Pixel Shaders? Hmm...

http://softwire.sourceforge.net/extra.html

Just thought I'd post this. A way to software emulate pixel shaders. Everything there is open-source, so if interested go and give the guy a call.

I'd like this thread to be mirrored for caustik too. ^_^

The PS2 uses software for pixel shaders also.

Holy monkey! This is awesome for all of us ATI users(People who are "stuck"with ATI's) I say stuck because my new obsession of xbox emulation calls for different hardware(geforce).

Now maybe xeon will work on my mobility 7500.

What's the BEST Nvidia card that supports PCI? I have a desktop that only has PCI slots. I'm planning to get rid of this crappy monitor out card. It sucks.

Stuck? LOL, I chose mine ...
ATI uses pixel shader 2.0, why is this so great?

I changed my post and said why. I think ATI's are nice, actually. But xbox and ATI don't mix well.

there are not good PCI cards. you will NEVER be able to run an xbox emulator worth a crap on PCI (PCI express, thats a different story )...get a new mobo with AGP, thats your best bet

Actually if this technology is integrated into CXBX or some other XBox emulator, then the abilities of your graphics card would no longer be a factor. Instead the speed of your CPU would control the speed of your overall XBox emulation experience. Basically this programmer also has a pretty nice dynamic recompiler which is what it uses to achieve such fast pixel shader emulation.

Sequel to PCI and PCI-X (the server version).
PCI provides a total b/w of 133MB/s
PCI Express x1 provides a b/w of 250MB/s per port.
Graphics cards are gonna be on x16 (3.9GB/s) IIRC

me think I heard that making a grpahic card for PCI-Express is just insanely expensive compared to AGP...

FX 5600 is the fastest PCI nVidia card I'm aware of. I wouldn't buy it just to try Xeon out, since you can just buy an XBox for the same price, and it'll be flawless.

DX 8.1/DX9 ATi Radeon cards in theory should be fine with an XBox emu since all the XBox has is an aging GeForce 3. I think the XBox doesn't use Pixel Shaders that are that advanced - either 1.0/1.1/1.4 (don't care which, it's one of them).

This technology would only benefit cards that have no Pixelshaders like ancient Radeons and MX cards, and ONLY if the CPU is fast enough. (Unlikely since if you can't afford a decent gfx card then you are unlikely to have a fast CPU either.)

Wow. Now that's an answer. Thanks man.

Well, I think my board was originally meant to be in a server (that might explain why it only has four pci slots, nothing more). I don't have any alternative; PCI is all I got. It's an 800mhz cpu. I'm beginning to wonder If I could overclock it to 1.1 .At least, that's the plan.

Anybody got any gaming options for me?

I guess. But pixel shaders on the software level can only go so far. It's better than nothing, though.

i read on some sites (including nVidia and ATI, i think) that PCI express is actually cheaper to make
