Xeon OpenSource ?

I wanne give my thanks to _SF_ for this great emulator.

Onl i still have a question for him...
is Xeon openSource ?

this will can speedup programming developing xeon if th project can be find on Sourcefource people can help debugging on great scale.

add fixes and everybody can see what is happening under the gui.
then we have 2 great programs opensource xeon & Cxbx.

greetz. Shadow_tj

Re: Xeon OpenSource ?

OpenSource <> it's a good project automaticaly. Look at some of hte finest PSX emu projects:
  • PSEmu Pro: First viable PSX emulation (if memory serves). Closed Source
  • Bleem!: Still the fastest PSX emu to date (even if it is lacking compatibility). Closed Source and Commercial
  • ePSXe: Arguably the finest PSX emu today. Closed Source
  • PSXeven: Probably the second best PSX emu. closed Source
For some, open source may be better, but others may not like thier project to be that way.

Re: Xeon OpenSource ?

i don`t say that he must put his emu open source or not... its up 2 himself.

i onl say it will be a great help for the xbox emu world that is in his first steps.
only if people can helpeach other programming on the same goal and not reinfenting the stuff others already have done.. it will be strong.. don`t see it as a compitition.. (some see it like this way ) but reaching a point.

Re: Xeon OpenSource ?

Well, its up to the emu author himself

Sure, Open Source will make a good start to anyone intersted to start his own emulator by looking at another source and see how does an emu work. Not to mention that the amount of contribution that project can get from various other coders

On the other hand, going Open Source might lead to many rip offs and ports to other OS/gaming systems without taking the permission of the author, and such acts are the main reason why some coders persist that their emu's source remain closed.

Yours,
-Elly

I can understand not wanting ripoffs (Although I don't see a problem with cases where the original author is given credit, such as "Feon, an Xbox emulator derived from SF's Xeon", not like a fork like that would be a good thing. (In 90% of cases, forking a project is Bad.)

On the other hand, what's wrong with ports to other OSes? Hell, that's one of the greatest things about open source. I would love to see Xeon working under Linux, and I'm sure plenty would love to see it under OSX.

For all the examples of open-source projects that were failures, there are other examples of ones that were successes. Look at zsnes and snes9x, for example.

Oh, and don't dismiss PCSX. I use it and it's great. Far more reliable than ePSXe on my system (I'm suspecting binary compatibility issues with my Linux distro).

I believe Elly said "ports to other OSes without giving credit.", I can definately see why an emu author wouldn't want that.

The shady thing about keeping Xeon closed is that Cxbx is open source, and clearly has provided help for Xeon. It would be quite nice to sort of repay the favor. Otherwise if you ask me its just sorta greedy.
