Banners

I came across a link in a banner (on NGEMU) advertising FFXI gil. Gil is the unit of currency in FFXI. This site is selling Gil for real money. http://www.ige.com/MG/server.asp?gid=6&sid=106

Quote:
(a) Any activities consisting of selling, purchasing or exchanging “gil” or any other currency that may be used in the Game from time to time, characters, and/or Game items for value (including, but not limited to, any payment in kind and any payment in any currency recognized as legal tender in any country, state, territory or other jurisdiction anywhere in the world) through any means or venue, including, without limitation, Internet auctions or other online exchanges;

To me it looks like a banner to an illegal site. Just thought I'd bring it up.

Because they are trading a currency that doesn't exist for one that does (Itchy and Scratchy money, anyone?). Its very likely that its not a fair trade.

You're mistaken. Money in subscription based MMORPGs is quite valuable. There is no unfair trade. I once knew a guy who played MMORPGs as kind of a second job, farming money then selling it on Ebay.

Regardless of whether or not we believe that it is a fair trade, though, the question of why it's "illegal" remains unaddressed.

That would be the day I would pay 700 dollars for video game money, that was probably aquired by bots/cheating/hacking.

Its pretty much either fraud or a rip off. I don't think NGEMU wants to be known for directing people to rip offs.

Taking a quick look at the link, I don't see how this is any different than how people sell gold for real money in Ultima Online or Everquest, which is neither fraud nor illegal.

As I quoted it's against the rules.

Some online games even say it's illegal to trade/sell their game currency. Is FFXI one of them?

*points to his quote and link to the users agreement*

If it wasn't illegal, I wouldn't have brought this up.

But I think it doesn't have real legal bearings... so people still sell them
The worst can happen is just a deleted account.

It's not "illegal", it's against the game rules. There's a very big difference there.

Does this surprise anyone ? I've seen weapons, items and accounts of MMORPGs being sold for outrageous sums of money on Ebay... call it digital E-commerce...

Your prolly right. It's still wrong though. Maybe I'll send that link to S-E.

a friend of mine made tens of thousands of dollars from selling game money from Shadowbane (no foolies--he was only 18 too) and eventually the game makers ordered him to knock it off.

Still wrong? How the hell is it "wrong"? Jesus. I'll bet you think macroing skills and using unsanctioned third party programs is "wrong" too. I don't play MMORPGs anymore, but when I did play (UO) I got real tired of people saying that third parties were "wrong" and ebay and other forms of online commerce was "wrong". There's nothing "wrong" about it. It's just against the rules of the game, rules which are fundamentally flawed in the first place. They're not designed to protect players, they're designed to protect the company's profit margain.

Heh, macros are built in FFXI. They are very important to use. BAnning 3rd party programs are hack preventions. Just how FFXI won't let the FFXI window leave focus, or it kicks you.

I think you misunderstood my incoherent ranting.

By macroing I meant scripting a set of actions then looping it. In UO, which is a skill based game, I was somewhat notorious for writing scripts to build character skills from zero to max completely unattended. This practice was bannable. (I was never banned, I quit when the last expansion came out. )

Regarding your comment about kicking you when the game leaves focus... WTF?! What if you get a message on AIM or something? That's pretty anal!

well youre getting a grossly unfair advantage over other people arent you? atleast the fanatics actually play the game, but going to the top without any work defeats the purpose of playing a game... its almost a cheat code, except this is online in a community so there should be even more steps to prevent that

these people who dont wanna play are just lazy, and the bots and hacks they use just end up lagging the servers... imagine if everyone used a bot all the time,...instead of having say on average 10,000 people be online at one time, you'd always have 100,000...
