Popups when going to message boards

It seems at some interval when I go to the main page and then try going to the Message Boards, there is a small "loader window" that pops up and then I get a popup advertisement. Now this wouldn't be so amazing except I am using Firebird with unrequested windows (ie. popups) specifically disabled. So from my perspective, it appears that ngemu has rigged the Message Boards link to force a popup advertisement which I would prefer not to see. I have tried with IE+Google Toolbar and it does the same thing.

I was curious if ngemu.com was triggering these popups themselves or if some ad was giving some unknown code and tricking it into running.

The message board has no popup advertising whatsoever, and never has had. The main site does though.

I use firebird and don't get any popups. Whatever's happening, it's only happening to you. Normally I would suggest you scan your system for spyware, but spyware usually causes popups through IE, not firebird.

Heh, heh... *me trys to hug my opera browser but gets a konk on the nogin*
Stupid Monotir. Anyways, there is an option in the User CP(or was it User Options on the main Page) that lets you disable pop-ups.

That's really odd. I had a literally brand new fresh from the formatted hard drive Win2k3 install, and I checked ngemu just out of getting my bookmarks redone, and I got one of those things. So I know it's not spyware. Spyware infecting Firebird sounds unusual as well. The only thing I have noticed is my Linux workstation has never done it while my XP boxes running IE or Firebird seem to catch it.

Xinu0- Firebird also has the ability to disable popups. In fact, almost every browser on the market today other than IE has the ability to block popups.

Quatro- I'm 99% certain that toolbar only works with IE. Nearly all such toolbars are designed as BHOs and/or with active-x, both of which are IE exclusive (which is fortunate since most spyware is also BHO/active-x based, so not using IE means cutting your spyware problems by more than 90%).

Are these normal webtype popups with pictures and crap, or are they more like message windows? The facts that A) You're running XP B) you're getting the popups even when not using IE and C) your linux machine is unaffected sound suspiciously like your problem is windows messenger. This is a "feature" (aka piece of utter garbage) of XP that has become a very popular way to spam people. 9x/me and earlier versions of windows are free from this malady, as are all non-windows systems, I'm not certain about 2k and nt. Supposedly the theory behind it was that it could be used by administrators to contact people on their network, but in reality is serves no useful purpose what-so-ever and is only used to spam people. To disable this piece of junk:
Quote:
Windows XP Home

1. Click Start->Settings ->Control Panel
2. Click Performance and Maintenance
3. Click Administrative Tools
4. Double click Services Scroll
5. down and highlight "Messenger"
6. Right-click the highlighted line and choose Properties.
7. Click the STOP button.
8. Select Disable or Manual in the Startup Type scroll bar
9. Click OK

Windows XP Professional
1. Click Start->Settings ->Control Panel
2. Click Administrative Tools
3. Click Services
4. Double click Services Scroll
5. down and highlight "Messenger"
6. Right-click the highlighted line and choose Properties.
7. Click the STOP button.
8. Select Disable or Manual in the Startup Type scroll bar
9. Click OK

No no these are ad popups (actually pop-unders, full-screen). The odd thing is they seem to be specifically designed for getting around pop-up blockers. When I click "Message Board" at random intervals (it doesn't happen every time), a small box appears in the lower right of my screen with an "Ad Network" identification, and then very quickly I got the huge pop-under.

They aren't messenger service related, I have that disabled. And they don't trigger on ANY other site except this one, and ONLY when I click that one link. If I click anything else on the left side of the main page, it doesn't do it.

BIG EDIT:

A-Ha! My *LINUX* machine is doing it too. Now that I saw it, I know it has actually happened before. The problem is Linux is such junk that the full-screen pop-under never happens. I do get the "Ad Network" small window though. It then loads the full-screen ad into that little window. I figured out that after I logged out of ngemu and then tried going to the forums a few times, it does it almost every single time.

This is not the pop-up for the main page. Firebird supresses that (IE without google toolbar does not). This is a separate window, which is running under the pretense that the "Message Board" link allows a requested window. This is not the messenger service or anything like that either.

The advertiser showing up in the box is yesup.com.

I just had this happen to me twice in Firebird too. A small pop-under, but it didn't spawn anything itself and disappeared. It was a Firebird Icon which means:
1)It's not spyware - that's IE driven.
2)It's not Windows Messenger.

I wasn't logged in the last two times, however (just reset cookies), so that may have been a deciding factor.

When you get the popunder, view source on the page and see if you can find the script that's causing it. Most likely it's an onclick event. Also, what style are you using on the site? That might be part of it.

Try running adaware or spybot. That might take care of the problem.

I did not say that he didn't. The second part of my post was meant to help him.

We don't run any popups when you click somewhere. There're codes in the mainpage to load popups, but only when you open up the mainpag eitself. The forum is completly popup free.

Of course, once I got my cookies set back up and am now staying logged in, the popup stopped showing up ...

Like I said, it happens under Linux. They make these programs for Linux? 8)

The main point is to a)confirm it's not just me, which has been done and b)determine if these popups that ignore my browser's settings are being done by this site specifically (like the admins have chosen to do this) or if they are being done without the admins' knowledge by the advertisers.

It's more of an ethical thing. I have set my browser to disable popups. This is a setting I have chosen. Now I'm being told "I don't care about your settings, you're getting popups." I'm curious to know who is telling me this.
