You get stars after you have a certain number of posts. The most a normal member can have is 7. Admins, Mods, Emu authors have more because they are special (and they are red too).

And yes, the stars have been fixed.

and the status youre calling is called "title" after 1 month of joining and posting you'll get your own and you can change them...
