What forum software do you use?

I like Invsionboard myself: http://www.invisionboard.com/

I'm fascinated by forum software and would love to know what you use and why. Originally I was coding my own news script and realised I could save myself some effort by downloading something already established. I learned a lot of php/sql that way though.

I've tried many free forum programs and even vb (in the demo mode), and I have chosen to use IB. IB offers me the following:

- Security
- Fantastic User management
- Easy Skin managment
- Intuitive admin CP
- Easy forum management
- Uses very few queries (and 1.2 uses even less than the 1.1.2 I'm using currently!)
- Fastest BB I tested.
- Spider tracker since 1.2 (tracks googlebot etc. So no need to hack in your own counter)
- Awesome hacks http://www.ibplanet.com/
- Huge community (I belive their numbers are inching closer to vb. But vb always had the majority of user IIRC)

Of course, the thing to remember is that the forum programmers are NOT in competition with each other. They have stated this numerous times. They all have their nich customers.

Be sure to link us to your forum. My forum is in my signature. I installed a couple of hacks:

Download - This way programmers and manage their own files for users to download.
Links - A links submission system. Durrr
Guestbook - This mod allows people to leave you messages on your proflile and it also doubles as a photo gallery for members
Gallery - This gallery is for screenshots of projects my users may be working on. We mostly use it to upload graphics rips from dreamcast and PSX games.

There are others but they are minor.

Re: What forum software do you use?

Also, how do you feel about guest management? Personally, I think they should be able to read everything on the forums. My site is about spreading knowledge and information so I don't think it would be fair to force someone to log in if they want to learn something.

The extras features like links and downloads and even posting replies is not available to them though. I mean, think about it. How do you reply to a guest? At least if they register you know they have a way of being contacted.

Re: What forum software do you use?

The boards software here is Vbulletin 3.0. and it does a bit more than just the forums, (I'm not clued into the details, but suffice to the say the board software is linked into ngemu to the point that if we switched it would most likely mean require a redesign for the site).

Regarding guests. They can read/download etc... I think about the only thing they can't do is post in the forums themselves.

BTW Double posting is frowed upon here. If you must add something, use the edit option in future.

heh, i use IB and phpbb2. I think guests should be allowed to read, but have speed limited downloads, like at 15kbps or less.

Re: What forum software do you use?

The front page of NGEMU I'm assuming is a portal hack/addon. Unfortunately the copyright has been removed (booo!) and I can't tell what portal addon is being used. It appears to have meshed quite nicely with the forum and user data though.

Limiting download speeds, intersting. At one point I was not letting them see emoticons for the same reasons (bandwidth) but the emoticons are small in size anyway.

Re: What forum software do you use?

The portal stuff was custom coded by Bobbi/dixon IIRC.

I use Invisionboard for my proums at www.lordkane.co.uk Pyro added a load of scripts so that the frontpage is all integrated into the forums. Hell there is little I need to do other than post in the forums to add new content.

Re: What forum software do you use?

InvisionBoard is regarded by most as the best free Bulletin Board. phpBB is good also.

UnknownForums and AI Bulletin Board or really any board except phpBB and InvisionBoard

A long time ago, with the first site I ever worked with, we used IkonBoard. I didn't personally admin it. Then we used yabbSE, and had horrid problems with security. Then the site went down.

My site runs phpBB2, for the sole reason that it was already installed when I took over the site. :P I've hacked the crap out of it, and even done a few small hacks of my own. I really like it. Right now I'm working on a re-design of my main page, and will probably integrate the forum software into the news panel. I have great hopes for phpBB 2.2, and plan to contribute once I become better aquainted with the software.

I see that SuperMOD is a yabbSE hack... good luck.

Re: What forum software do you use?

SuperMOD is kind of a continuation for YaBBSE. The author of SuperMOD is part of the YaBBSE Team.

I prefer phpBB opposed to all of those because it's easily modable and the security is way better than IF it may be a Best Buy to setup but it's worth it.
