Start out by learning C and C++, if im right, after that try finding an open source emu and see how its build.
At least its a start

You can also learn OpenGL and Direct3D too...

emutalk.net has a forum for C++ language and contain some useful links to D3D and C+ tutorials...

if this is the first time you try programming, it's very far away when you can actually _start_ to work on an emulator. be patient, and be interested in it ^_^ motivation is the most important

Trying to start a PSX Emulator is not for newbies to C/C++. It requires alot of studing and patients to learn C/++. I could be years for you are at such a level to start a project like that.

oh, and you also need to know the hardware which you'll be emulating (and which you will be emulating it on) inside out. discouraged yet? j/k, we're only trying to prepare you ^^

Before you run, you must learn to walk. Emulation is in my opinion one of the most complex topics, better start with something else (like writing you own games). When you are experienced enough, you can still try the emu thingy.

Before about 2 years i said the same to PsychoJak.
He started to learn C++, and i remember that he didn't even knew how many bits a "char" has. He tried to learn C++ while coding his PSX Emulator PSinex. I thought it's impossible for someone without any programming knowledge to write a psx emulator, and i told him that everytime I saw him.
But now, look at his website, PSinex plays commerical games and is one of the best PSX-Emu's out there.

I think with such a complex project you can learn a language faster and easier, than writing for years simple tools which doesn't challenge you.

Did he have experience with other programming languages then? Or was he completely new to programming?
