Real time Chat

I'm looking for a real time chat solution, but based on the web (one you can use in your browser) and preferably that does not use IRC (for example, to alow a board's member to comunicate real-time).
Any ideas?

Hmmm...
I've seen such modules for ASP, but I'm aware that you use PHP.
Although, I'm sure you would have no trouble creating one on your own, but beware...these things use a huge amount of CPU.

All you would have to do is create a two-framed page, one for text entry, the other for display of the actual chat. Just set the chat display for an auto refresh and have it display the chatters' text from a database. The bottom frame page will just submit the text to the database. It seems relatively simple.

hum, never though of that... but indeed, that would be a huge blow on the server (and a huge ammount of bandwithd wasted from psxfanatics' server ).So maybe the best thing is forget it...
Is there anyway to make a "not so expensive" one? What about if I do use IRC?

IRC is simple. All you have to do is setup your channel somewhere and configure an applet. The users' bandwidth is then utilized for the chat as well. It's the ideal setup, which is why I'm sure most people use it.

So it wouldn't put a big load on the server?

There will be no extra load placed on the sever as the user incurs the bandwidth usage. The applet loads within the page and it's just as if the user would be connecting to IRC via their own IRC client.

the perfect thing for that is the jpilot jirc java applet, but you would have to find a nice and fast server to wich your users will connect (efnet or a private network) . The applet is not free but I don't think it costs much.

Yeah...that's the one I was referring to. It's the most common one in use. You can download it @ http://www.jpilot.com and I believe that the registration fee is $50 USD. Most people crack it, but hey...we don't support piracy here, right?

Like the chat at this page: www.kemazon.com it's in spanish but it's easy to get to the java based chat using an Applet.
