Question C++ vs. C#

Can someone tell me the difference between Microsoft Visual C++ and Visual C#?

What is this whole .NET thing Microsoft is promoting?

The whole .net thing is somehow like the java virtual machine. The difference is that there are many languages that generate Bytecode for the virtual machine, C# and VB.net were the first. C# is a language very similar to Java. Compared to C++, it is more abstract and probably much easier to learn. On the other hand, C++ generates native code that should be faster in normal circumstances.
