Newbie question for VBA on OS X

I downloaded VisualBoyAdvance 1.7.2 OS X as well as some roms to try out. I extracted the roms so its a folder, and inside the folder is the file. I tried to load the game, but it refuses to work (I get an "unknown file type" error). Does it have to be a certain kind of rom to work, or are they all the same?
The name of the files all end in ".nds". I tried changing it to ".gba" because I have another file ending in that, but it also doesn't work (I dont get a warning or error, it just shuts down right away when loading the .gba)
Do i need to move the rom files into the same folder as VBA, or do i load the unextracted .rar rom?

Or is this all an incompatible issue, and all the roms i have are for windows only?

Thanks.

EDIT::

I realized .nds is short for Nintendo DS.
Is there a DS emulator for OS X yet?
or a way to play DS games on GBA?

No. They're called "Backups". :/ It says so somewhere. I'm too lazy to go search for it.

A Backup is when you dump the data yourself off of a Media you own.

Downloading off the internet is however illegal, as the data is not yours and you were not the one who made the backup of of a media in question.

You are only entitled to the media you own and not every copy in the world floating around on the internet. It is even illegal to dump a game off of a friends media. Because your friend owns it, and you don't own that particular media/data you are therefore not entitled to it and it is illegal.

If you do make a backup off of a media you own and sell or give the media away, you have to immediately destroy the backup.

In some countries even Backing up your media is considered illegal, and also Nintendo or someone took it to court where it is illegal to back up data on cartridges.

I know, those copyright laws can be a B!tch sometimes, but this forum takes the Legal safe side approach to emulation where you must backup your media and data yourself to be eligible for support. anyone who admits otherwise or asks for/posts links to copyrighted material, their thread is immediately closed as soon as seen by a moderator and the appropriate action taken for the poster

As Xtreme2damax said, there is no where on Earth that when you buy a Mercedes and own all the Mercedes' in the world.
Internet as a place DOES NOT EXIST; downloading something from the Internet is not getting something from a 'free' place. Internet is just a link that connects you to some computers that physically exists. Consequently, you cannot 'backup' anything ON the Internet, you can just take stuff from other people's computer.
As a result your 'backups' you are mentioning are other owner's stuff.
Back to the example, since other Mercedes are own by other people, does that mean that if I own one, I can go to someone's house across the street (crossing road is similar to browsing Internet) and drive his Mercedes away?

Thanks Fadingz, that pretty much sums it up

Sorry if my post was incoherent, I had just woke up and had not had my daily dose of caffeine at the time.

Me and Fadingz pretty much summed up the truth, that you are only entitled to data on media you own, anything else is warez and is not tolerated on these forums.

Once you sell or give away the original media, you must destroy any backups associated with the media, except for game saves of course.

As stated by me one more time, you can not borrow or rent a game and make a backup of it, as that is illegal as well.

Also so you know so this excuse is not used, the 24 hour rule that romsites claim where you must get rid of the game after 24 hours if you do not own it is bull. You are not entitled to any other backup, game, or data than the one on a media you currently own and have in your possession.

There is probably more than this on the Illegality/Legality, that a moderator will explain to you if you need to know more

Yeah... Whatever. I can understand by one post. I'm not a moron, I'm perfect in my understanding skills and literacy.

Also, the Internet is data and whatnot. If you get something on the Internet, you're not technically 'stealing' is from someone. When you send someone a file on MSN or whatever, it's not like it takes the picture away from the sender. In real life, you actually ARE. And I never said that if you own something, you own them all.

Heh.

Internet is NOT a place. Everything you uploaded is stored somewhere in the world in a computer that physically exists. As you send a file via e-mail or MSN, you duplicate the file and send the copy to another computer. In the progress, you are making illegal copies of the file; this action violates the copy right.

Yes. However, my point is, you are not stealing it from the uploader.

No, you are not, not from the upleader.
The fact is: you AND the uploader are stealing from the author.
Dude... you have no point; go to google and search for copyright on your own.
Well, you are giving me quite a good laugh over here

I KNOW. Holy crap. Learn to read.

All I said was, my point is: You are not stealing from the uploader, of which I have proved. I never said anything about what you are talking about.

You proved nothing...what you have...a brick in your brain?
what ever I want to say now will be repeating myself and will be saying to a brick wall...
but what I am doing now is laughing as hard as I can
