Save State misload - VBAlink + Pkmn LF

My friend and I have been using Pokemon FR and LG roms, playing them together and duking it out over link cable, we're both using:
windows xp, vba link 1.7.2 he's saving on automatic - 64k save states
we're playing, he loads the rom and hits f1 to load the state and it loads a game state in the beginning of the game (low level pkmn, cerulean city, etc)
he had a party of lv35s and was in fuschia, etc
This is the only save state he had, what happened and how can we amend this???

you can't link your game is you can't save using in game save.
maybe you havent applied pk fr ips save patch and maybe you must start your game all over again and remember use a in game save.

the best thing to do is get the patch problem fixed so you can use naitive saves, and then use both shift / and naitive saves both working together.
