Repairing Windows XP Pro SP2?

I started having a problem with Acronis Disk Director 10 after a recent system reformat where when trying to install Acronis Disk Director it gets to the end of the install and the progress bar starts going backwards.

When that happens I get an error saying, "The Installer was interrupted before Acronis Disk Director could be uninstalled. Please restart the installer to try again".

A reboot doesn't solve it, I've already checked all my services which are running and I really don't want to have to reformat again.

Would a repair of Windows XP fix the problem? If so, would a repair break any of my currently installed applications or games? I don't really want to have to reinstall anything.

How do I perform a repair on a copy (Legit) of Windows XP Pro SP2. I have the XP Pro SP2 disc right now with me.

Thanks if anyone can help.

As far as I know none of your installed applications will be affected in any way however some drivers (probably including DirectX) may be lost and all Windows Updates will be lost.

A quick google search revealed these links however you may want to do some personal searching aswell.

Accessing The*Different Methods of Repair Available in Windows XP

How to Perform a Windows XP Repair Install
Perform a Repair Installation
How to perform an in-place upgrade (reinstallation) of Windows XP
Repair Windows XP - How to Perform a Repair Installation of Windows XP - Part 1 of 2

If you do do it then let me know how it goes because it's an option I have been considering myself.

you could also just invoke a WFP files scan, this scans the current integrity of the installed protected critical files, and in case corruption is found, these can be replaced with recognized versions from the original XP disc.

iirc, you can invoke a one time scan with this command (in either "Run" or cmd.)
sfc /scanonce
or
sfc /scannow

is the Acronis installer actually noncorrupt btw? couldve been that too.

Not to my knowledge, it was working fine before. Is only crapping out after recently reformatting/reinstalling Windows XP.

All of my data is archive on a separate external drive which I had unplugged while reinstalling Windows.

It seems something is interfering with the installer Acronis is using, or service Windows Installer depends on might not be activated, disabled or corrupt.

Have you checked your event logs? There might be a log which has more information on the error.

I no longer have the problem of doing a Windows Repair or not...my Harddrive crashed so it's gonna be a clean install on a new harddrive.

Where exactly would I find an error log for this?

As soon as I know where the logs are stored I'll post more information.

It's Control Panel>Admin Tools>Event Viewer or something like that.

This is the error in the log:

Product: Acronis Disk Director Suite -- Installation failed.

EventID - 11708

The problem occurs with the MSI installer Acronis uses. It seems something got screwed somewhere and I don't know how to fix it.

I've already tried a system repair for XP, which didn't help.

Theres nothing on Acronis's website or their forum about the problem except one forum post which doesn't say how to fix the problem.

I've searched the EventID on Google, yet nothing much on how to fix the problem.

Well I did start out using one name for my PC, and then I changed my user name to something else.

Note: I changed my User Account Name to something else from the original name I used when I reinstalled Windows XP.

I wouldn't of thought that would of caused a problem though. Yes my User Account has administrative rights.
