Question about merging files.

I just download Chrono Cross for the PS1. I already have the game on CD but I don't want to use it with epsxe because its very very scratched up and mostly unplayable (on some days). In any case I download the files from a site and it came in about 9 differnt files. How exactly do I combine all those files so they work as a whole instead of individuals. Im rather confused by this and I am a newb so I guess that doesnt help either. Can someone assit me?

They should extract into one bigger file (they should be Rar files).

You could have just tried to create an ISO image of your disc by the way, before resorting to downloading a backup.

Well start by extracting the file in the first rar archive and it should automatically extract the rest into one large file and one or two smaller files. The large file would be an image file of the original disc which can be mounted as it was the original disc through a program called Daemon Tools.
Alternatively it could just be all the files from the original disc...which I don't know the setup of.

I still think it would be best to create an image of your own disc though. This way you can ever create a backup of your disc if it ever becomes completely unreadable.

It seems MSN does not transmit my messages to your propperly...

@ yglangel

Just use Isopuzzle, it works and keeps retrying till a perfect copy is made. Tried on a hyperscratched+rotted cd of gran turismo 2 (with which all other softs gave up, no matter what setting were used), worked flawlessly (spent 7 hours on it though, but the image making process doesnt need to be done in one time. a little now, a little after homework... )

@ schumi
A rule reminder would've been more appropriate.

Well...err yeah...just theres slightly different copyright rules in different countries...and besides I have also experienced old games which no longer work due to the disc being completely messed up after so much use...

um guys, you realise he provided the name of a warez site in his post.
thats against the rules.

i personally don't care about him downloading it since he already owns it (even though Square-Enix would readily replace the disks at a small cost)

yes I am having same problem. The rar files...are they perhaps listed as "...part01", "...part 02" ect...? Used to have the discs, but can't find them, probably never will! Looked at prices for the game...$100-$200 for a ps one game?? and I thought $65 (after tax) for a ps3 game was a lot!!

I have no proof of original ownership, as many probably do not for games/systems 3 gens old!!! I'm sure square won't just say "$10 + S/H, and we will mail you a copy of a game we don't know if you ever paid for!"

Anyways... the game comes in compressed part files. Problem is the parts(1-9, or 1-12 in my case) extract to the same file name. I tried renaming with a letter suffix before the file extension (i.e.: gamewhatever CD1"a".7z then gamewhatever CD1"b".7z). I got 12 files with different names, which I think I need... but all the files are the exact same size. My only guess is someone zipped, compressed, labled, or uploaded incorrectly. But then i see someone else having same problem with different game, so I'm not sure anymore.

Also what's with the ".7z" file extension? Does anyone know what program uses this? If I knew that I might have a better idea of what to do with my 12 files.

You want them to extract to the same file ...

They are a big file split into lots of smaller files so that it can more easily be downloaded/transferred.

Just google 7z to find out more about it.

thanx

I can't (or don't know how) to extract the 12 files i Downloaded into one. the compressed size is like 40 MB and extracted it's like 400 something MB. Maybe the outputted file (400 mb) IS the extraction of all parts. At first i only had 11 of 12 parts, and at 95% of the extraction it would ask me for part 12. So maybe I'm just a dumbass!! I'll check this out.

I didn't think a search of 2 characters was possible, but thanks. Prolly should've tried that before posting....but thanx again for your help

Was 7z also the extension of the 400MB file? If not then it has no further relevance.

The emu should be able to read it yes...then again I have never owned a console so I don't quite know how their files work.
