trouble through "direct IP" in SupCom

my friend and I are trying to play supcom over a direct connect ip, using the multiplayer/LAN option. the reason for this is because he can't get gpg.net to work on his computer.

so our only option is to play through a direct connect game. computers are so awsome that I know there must be a way to do this without acutally being on the same LAN. we have tried telling each other our IPs and the correct port, but he always has to abort the connection because his game will not connect to mine.

works wonders with LAN-only games, or those whose official central servers got shut down, like Need For Speed Underground 2
