hellgate london EATING MY RAM!

couln't decide if this should go in games or software discussion, so move it if you have to.

Hellgate London has been using up absurd amounts of memory on my computer. For example, my pagefile before playing was ~4gb(hard drive allocation + 2 gigs of RAM). After about an hour of playing i got a windows memory error telling me all of my memory was exhausted.

I look at my pagefile and windows had increased it to 8 gigs
No other game does this, not Crysis, not SupCom, nothing. In fact, this little incident reminded me why I dislike playing Hellgate and why I dont play it often.

has any had the same problem, or know a solution?

It should be known that i have vista 64-bit, and the rest of my comp is in my sig.

try lowering your audio acceleration to basic via dxdiag. it might give you f'ed up sound but it may stop the crashes, ive read about other people that do it and it either reduces crashes or eliminates them altogether. other than that the only thing i can think of is to log off every hour or so and log back in. however its probably wise to just wait until some sort of patch is released because ive heard of other people having this problem so it isnt just user-error on your part. it seems that it is a well known bug that seems to have something to do with sporadic garbage collecting making your machine get overloaded with unpurged info, which ends up causing your memory to run out, regardless of the amount of RAM you have. more RAM might delay it, but i dont think it can prevent it outright. this might only apply to the single player part, i dont know about multiplay. i just got this game myself and i have had hardly any time to play it so my experience with this bug is non-existant at the moment, right now im going off things ive heard and read.

have you got all the latest Vista patches installed? theres some issues with Vista x64's memory management if you haven't.

also, it might be a memory leak in the game itself.

it is a memory leak. thats why no one can really do anything about it right now aside from delaying the inevitable until they release a patch of some sorts to fix it.

the memory errors occur in both the single and multiplayer versions of Hellgate. i really hope they fix this memory leak problem soon, because its such a great game that i hate playing it in 1 hour shots

but yeah, i was considering getting another 2 gigs of ram until i learned that the problem would persist no matter how much ram i have. thx for saving me a couple hundred bucks

man what is it with developers these days? would it kill them to spend a bit more time to get rid of stuff like this before they release something to the general public? i just sat down a while ago to fool around with the game and what do you know, i get the memory error about a hour into it, just like you guys. gah i hate computer games and their buggy bugcraptastic bugness sometimes.

There was a time when proper testing was the norm, to leave maximum positive impressions on gamers... Doesnt seem this the norm any longer, with game release cycles getting higher priority than the rest, especially true on PC (release a patch, fixed)

when i pay money for a game i expect it to work, at least to some degree. if they are not willing to put effort into making a playable product, they shouldnt bother making one then. with half assed work jobs like we have seen with this game we end up spending more time trying to fix the stuff they are supposed to be responsible for than actually playing the game itself. there are exceptions to certain aspects of bugs and stuff but when you have one like this that makes the thing practically unplayable, thats just a total rip off. i dont find doing their job for them and not getting paid for it to be very fun.

well for anyone intrested, they have released a patch for hellgate that will update your version to 0.6. however ive yet to apply it myself due lack of time/intrest so i dont know the specific fixes it includes but i would imagine it has some sort of correction for the memory leak so many people are getting. download it here.

just so everyone knows, the hellgate multiplayer was patched to .7 wednesday the 19th. singleplayer is now patched at .6

and yes, the memory issue has been addressed in the new multiplayer patch (dont play the singleplayer so i dont care to know if the issue was addressed in that)

the hellgate multiplayer is now playable, played for a few hours today and yesterday without crashing. however the game does still use a large amount of memory for an action-rpg, and it is not very alt-tab friendly.

so while it is playable, make sure your all settled in before you start up, cause it is not a very "zippy" game.
