Backspace in Word 2002 not deleting text

I noticed this recently when I want to delete selected text using Backspace it just skips where the selection ends, doesn't delete it. If used on a character at a time it does but it takes too long. Delete works but I'm just not used to it! Any ideas what could have happened?

Tools ---> Options

In the Edit tab, enable "Typing replaces selection". I can reproduce your problem on Words 2003 by disabling this option
