Alky Project:DX10 on XP and other OSes

DX 10 on Os outside Vista

As a fitting start to this blog, I'm proud to release a preview of our Alky compatibility libraries for Microsoft DirectX 10 enabled games. These libraries allow the use of DirectX 10 games on platforms other than Windows Vista, and increase hardware compatibility even on Vista, by compiling Geometry Shaders down to native machine code for execution where hardware isn't capable of running it. No longer will you have to upgrade your OS and video card(s) to play the latest games.

The current preview allows you to run a number of examples from the Microsoft DirectX SDK on Windows XP. They're not the greatest thing since sliced bread, but we want to whet your appetite. We hope to release builds in the coming months progressing from demos to fully functional games. We also plan to post on this blog from time to time with screenshots and videos of what's to come.

The preview build is available here. Inside this zip is a README.TXT file with complete instructions on where to install the files (don't worry, we'll have an installer in the near future) and how to get and run the examples from the SDK.

We at Falling Leaf welcome your feedback, and we're committed to giving you the best high-end gaming experience possible, regardless of OS.

Enjoy,
- Cody Brocious

I'm quite skeptical until I see this actually working, After all, there will be performance hits etc if it does work. I'm not programmer minded,
it will be interesting what you guys (programmers) make of this.

But if it were to work what gamer needs vista?
I'm not really surprised that someone has attempted this, it was only a matter of time I feel.

Claims of Halo 2 and Shadowrun to work on Xp

Currently, our estimate is late July, but it isn't solid.
hmmmm, It might be worth a shot if someone wants these games bad but have XP, then again who knows how well it might work.

but in answer to your skeptisism, its just a dx9 wrapper, converts some of the dx10 calls to dx9

So this is about DX10 on XP, and they talk about the two games that aren't DX10? Shadowrun and Halo 2 are DX9

so does this mean DX 10 features will be converted to Dx 9?
so DX 10 prettiness will turn into a Dx 9 game?

Actualy i'm happy to say that i'm running Shadowrun on XP :P

A team called Razor1911 released a "cracked" version of Shadowrun that can also be played on XP , by copying some files over the original instalation.

Just for fun i installed my original shadowrun and copied the files.
And guess what , it worked .And it still dose. You can probably find the release on torrent sites and snag the dll's there.

I was talking about the XP patch, not the Razor release, although i think the patch was made by Razor, it doesn't replace anything either so, its about as legal as yours

well I thought it was silly that XP users would miss out on DirectX10. It's still supported OS so it should always be updated till XP/product becomes unsupported. Its nice though theres people out there making it possible.

Halo and shadowrun are dx9 games arn't they? Thats probably why they can be run on xp so easily. I do not think it will be as easy to run DX10 games on xp without recoding/directing most of the library calls and even then will be quite slow. Its stupid though of microsoft to only allow dx10 for vista. If anything I'm sure they or someone else will find a workaround to install dx10 in XP and that will end that.

Its like the microsoft tablet exclusive programs that supposedly wont work without a tablet pen. All you need is a few dlls and suddenly your mouse becomes your pen. :P
