Norton Antivirus 2007??

When I got my laptop last year it came with Norton Antivirus 2006...I like the program, it has sucessfully protected my laptop from virus and attacks...I update my definition files regularly. My only problem with it is that it is resource hungry...I read somewhere that Norton Antivirus 2007 is slimmer and uses less resources, however the user reviews I've seen do far have been so negative...

Norton AntiVirus 2007 Ratings. Internet security and firewall User Opinions.

What is your opinion? Should I upgrade to Norton Antivirus 2007 or do I stick with Norton Antivirus 2006...The reason I wanna upgrade is cos of the fact that Norton Antivirus 2007 uses less resources and I read that the code was completely reworked...Please advice

I'd recommend to switch your antivirus to either NOD32 or Avira AntiVir (free), they both use less ressources and don't try to take complete control of your system, and on top of that they held the top 2 positions in a recent comparison I've read...but that's just me :-)

I'm more comfortable with Symantec's Norton line...i don't plan to change to another Antivirus product because Norton Antivirus 2006 served me well...All I want is advice on whether I should upgrade to Norton Antivirus 2007...but the user's reviews I read on CNet is disastrous...So I need advice from Ngemuans

2007 version is significantly slimmer than 2006 in terms of both memory and CPU power required. 2006 edition is extremely resource hungry and increases boot time by an unacceptable amount.

Norton doesnt bring comfort, it brings hysteria. Every little thing that goes on it goes "WARNING!! This is happening!" so you think "gosh im glad i installed norton"

regardless of that, its crap, id do as furbyhater suggested.

At the very least, switch to Symantec's corporate product, then. It's much slimmer and more suited towards productive PC usage.

Agreed. The non-corporate versions are a total mess, even 2007, wich still manages to get WAY more positive reviews than 2006 and up.

The time of weekly updates is over. Sharing the number one top spot: NOD32 and Kaspersky. Those also update multiple times a day by default and provide a protection not to be sneezed at. A feat I am certain Norton and McAfee will NEVER manage to, especially with PatchGuard.

JFYI, a rewrite was absolutely necessary to not keep these AV's dependant on kernel hookin'. Without one, either those would be slow as slugs, or highly ressources-taxing. Obviously, a compareason would undermine their legacy in such a case, especially among the corporate market.

While the 2007 AV is "okay", using the full Norton Security Suite is just SM. The firewall make one go nut sometimes. Especially when it flags 100% legitimate/clean files for no good excuse.

I feel sorry for those who refuse to use another AV than Norton... On my comp I'd never install something with "Norton" in it's name.

Happy NOD32 user here, and that's because it doesn't even slow down anything at all even if all services are turned on, I could even run benchmarks with it running without seeing any noticable loss in scores. lol It gets updated all the time automaticly, good for the lazy and comfortable person.

Norton used up a lot of RAM with me and it blocked almost everything I tried to do, even though it was not harmful. I tend to stick to the free antivirus programs now. I recommend AVG.

I don't really like AVG. I've seen it cause weird issues with a lot of software.

i want to put in another good word for symantec antivirus that FLaRe85 was talking about. in fact, if you go to a post-secondary eduaction institution, chances are its available to you to download for free.

however, i recently noticed this kasperskey antivirus that ppl are saying is even better...has anyone tried?

In all the tests I have seen, Kaspersky has the best overall detection of all the major antivirus products, but it uses more resources than Nod32.

Actually, NOD32's the no 1 top dog. But I admit those AV websites give more importance to HTML checking, in wich Kaspersky fares somehow better than NOD32.

An excellent point for NOD32, wich I suppose you havent tested, is it remains exceptionally protective against unknown/0-day threats, EVEN with 4 months old updates. Even Kaspersky doesnt manage such a feat, with Norton being waaay closer to the bottom. Safari people should appreciate (though they should be more wary of malaria than melissa&co.)

Kaspersky is turning more and more bloated btw. Reminds me of the Zonealarm Suite, wich is exceptionally ressources-hungry, and is highly likely to slow most computers to a crawl.

While most people dont mind when their speyware-ridden, b0tnet-hosting inet connection being "slower than usual", if it takes as much as 3 minutes to open a simple DOC file , then regardless of personal AV preferences, THAT is too much of a price to pay.

Note: AVG can sometimes have definition update signatures hiccups, wich can cause the issues people report. Downloading updates in bulk, and rechecking for updates works better btw.

I have used norton (2005 and 2006 tho... never bothered with 2007), avg (free), nod32, avast, mcafee 2007 (internet security), pc-cillin (2002, 2006, and 2007), and kaspersky (internet security)... and a bout a million free trials of other anti viruses/internet security suites.
Right now I am using kaspersky internet security (since december) and it is by far the best(although it is a bit on the pricey side). Boot time wasn't affected much, and my computer hasn't slowed down significantly either.

The only competition that i found was between NOD32 and Kapsersky, but NOD32 didnt have an antispyware or other protections other than the basic AV, and took a bit longer than kaspersky to boot, so now i use kaspersky

So basically... if your gonna change (i REALLY suggest you switch), Kaspersky is the way to go. (second preference --> NOD)

I use AVG Free Edition here. I couldn't believe how much faster my system ran after I got rid of Norton. I really like AVG, never had any problems at all (I used to wonder why it took so damn long for me to FTP files over to my Xbox, well now I know why!).
