Angry Frustration with Vista.

I hope someone could help me on getting permissions to edit the program files folder on Vista.

Installed a little video app to test, but when I try to update the codecs inside by manually copying some, it tells me that I don't have permissions.

I have taken ownership and full control of the folder but to no avail.

if you want i avoid alot of vista compatibility problems .. use the admin account as your default.., ofcource its not the best for the security ..if you are careful with what you download then its quiet ok ..., i get much less problems(if any) when switched to the admin account..(or maby just turn the UAC off..not sure)

One of the first thing I did was turning off UAC since I installed.

I am the administrator, the only user I can choose.
Or is there another account I could use?

Permissions can be changed from properties. You NEED to take ownership of the file, this is done through properties.
Then rename the old file, and rename the new one to what it's suppost to be.

Yes mogster I did that, but it wont let me modify the file.

I can't even copy files inside the directory in the programs folder.

This is making me wish I had XP.

did you use window's built in unzip program? I had some similar issues with rights when using that, but not with 7zip.

7zip.org, it's free.

anyway, I asked because I used the built in function in Vista, and then it went on about how the file wasn't originating from my PC and it acted funky about it.

Thanks to Mire for the suggestion, I found a way to do it by booting in safe mode.
