What OS is Right For Me?
I have a IBM T84 and starting completely from scratch as far as software is concerned(No Hardware Changes). I am making it a pc strictly for design (web, grfx, photo editing, ect). What version of windows totally fits what I am trying to do?

XP Pro for now, I suggest; Vista is a hungry beast and is still buggy for the time being.

If you don't mind experimenting, you might want to give Ubuntu Studio a try. It comes bundled with applications that fits your needs coupled with the easiness of use characteristical of ubuntu , and since it is free you have nothing to lose just trying it

Well as I said, Ubuntu has long been known for its easiness of use. To be truthful, it is almost approaching Mac levels of you don't really have to work with the console if you don't really want to

interesting Proto. i need to update my computers now that school is out and im thinking of going along with Ubuntu again (first time ive gone back to the same Linux distro so Ubuntu is surely doing something right).
i like the look of studio (versus default ubuntu), but what applications are included in this studio stream? surely its not just content creation and no office apps..

Here is a list of the bundled packages. Unfortunately it doesn't come bundled with an office suite, but installing one is just a matter of telling synaptic to download open office... (well on the other hand it shouldn't be too difficult to download a normal Ubuntu flavor and just telling Synaptic to download the needed packages. Whatever suits your boat
)

XP will have better compatibility for you. Linux distros are worth looking at, though may or may not be mature enough for you. Bear in mind, first and foremost linux is a developer's OS. That's where the focus lies. On the other hand, as stated above, it will cost you nothing to try, and the tools do exist for what you're looking for.

As far as software is concerned, if you already paid for some graphic design software, and if WINE doesn't support it, then go with XP. Vista will be of no benefit to you, and will actually hurt you in the long run.
But seriously....check out Linux. See what open-source software you can use....if you can find something that can do just as much as a commercial product, why not save a few bucks? There is also a good possibility that WINE can run your Windows-Only apps. |
