Music player:
XMMS. Yes, XMMS. Other apps I either don't like the playlist method (especially Amarok) and/or are extremely unstable/buggy/crash on me. XMMS is the only music player I use, and destroys all others even today.

Messenger:
gaim -> Pidgin (new name)

DVD/CD:
cdrecord / wodim (Debian's version of cdrecord)

Bittorrent:
ktorrent (best one, I think)

image viewing:
gqview (I don't use compressed files, compression doesn't help much anyway)

irc:
irssi

other:
grip (cd ripper)
pan and/or klibido (usenet)
vim / gvim (best text editor ever. Bring on the holy wars. )
gimp (image editing)
nethack (Best roguelike game ever.)

If what you search is simplicity and stability then you should give quod libet a try. Anyway, XMMS is a shoud-include in any fav program list so I'm adding it

It's not much compression as it is packaging what one searches when using those formats.

Quote:
gaim -> Pidgin (new name)
whoops, forgot about that one

vim / gvim (best text editor ever. Bring on the holy wars. )
While that one is my choice as well when working on a console... I normally prefer something prettier like gedit or leafpad

Well now that this is going to happen

Quote:
Recently, discussions between Beryl and Compiz have led to an agreement to merge the two projects. "This project, going by the temporary name of "Composite Community", will be based on the latest Compiz core and will provide the 'best' plugins, decorators, settings tools, and related applications from each community."[1][2][3]
I would like to wait a little more and see what happens

1. gcc (It's not an operating system if it doesn't have a compiler - that's an inoperating system)
2. gvim / kate / kedit / emacs
3. vixie-cron (or something similar)
4. syslog-ng
5. And an absolute must-have... wine + cygwin, to really screw with your mind

Surprisingly it doesn't come in Ubuntu as a default application, so I guess it's worth adding it up there

o_o Wouldn't that create a micro-black hole or something?

Most of what i use is already mentioned, but for a nice, lightweight music player i use Exaile. and for games you can't go wrong with scourge and egoboo :P

Are there any good music making software? I use Reason, Cubase and Acid on my WinXP. If there are, I'll delete my winXP cause thats the only reason I use it.

There are a good number of apps out there for music creation. If you would like to try them, Dyne:bolic (described here) is a live CD operative system packed with many of the best audio/video/image editing/creation tools that there are in Linux. With the Live CD you can just try the apps without initially installing Linux. If you like it you can later choose another more robust distribution, and you'll already know what applications to use

Disclaimer: please note that the desktop environment that is included with that distribution is designed to be light and simple, however it leaves things to desire in the aesthetic department. Better distro's come with more elegant desktops environment, however for trial purposes it does the trick
