I would add audacious to "Music Players" because its look&feel is like xmms/winamp and it is actively developed, unlike xmms which is dead.

As nice distros, I would recommend keeping a copy of SAM Linux 2007, and Puppy Linux 2.16 available on CD's at all times, to prevent disasters, and unproductive periods. Those work directly from CD's, and dont require hard drives for operation (provided there is enough ram obviously).

- SAM Linux 2007 is a buffed up clone of PCLinuxOS 2007
(with added codecs, convenient softs, usability and 3d effects that makes it a visually attractive, appropriate, quality choice especially for first-timers).
Note:PCLinuxOS is itself Mandriva-based.

- Puppy Linux is a superlightweight distro that fits into 128 megas of ram and works fast/reliably on very old computers. Keep those P II's handy, cuz there's still hope for 'em.
Can also boot from a USB drive as well.

Also, a few links, or repository links wouldnt be too bad. Let me remember the biggest repository's adress and I'll be right back. Yes, even bigger than Debian's.

A nice addon to Hard Core Rikki's distro's is Slax its a Linux distro that boots from a Usb Flash Drive and is based on Slackware. I use it when I am not home or when I need to fix my pc.

I'm kinda partial to Gentoo LiveUSB, myself... though I honestly have my own reasons for such. Instead of going for universal compatibility like most liveCD and liveUSB distros do, I configured this to only work on a Via C3 (or in my case C7) CPU. That way the machine is useless until I stick my USB "key" into my car

.

However, as a universal liveUSB distro, it's pretty solid. As long as you keep the stick in read-only mode, it's lightning fast and won't destroy your stick.

The reason you'd want it in read-only mode is because of a limitation of Flash - a limited number of writes before it becomes a paper weight. Basically, you keep a "scratch pad" in RAM to write to, and on shutdown you do an rsync back to the stick to record finalized changes (and only the changes - not a single byte that didn't change is re-written... well, beyond file system limitation, at any rate). Cool stuff.

Tomboy (a wiki notepad)
Puppy Linux (minimalist distro that fits in ram and allows to remove disc, even on hyperold comps)
Trinity Rescue Kit (could save your systems when nothing else can)

I find normal music players (Audacious, amarok, etc) to be just as good qualitywise and more flexible with playlists and such than MPD and its clients.

only the best deserve a mention. This is not a list of everything that exists, merely the most highly regarded apps. btw, the windows list looks slightly more confusing than necessary

Add Transmission ot the list, under Bittorrent client for Linux. Its turned into a nice uTorrent alternative, and now that its Ubuntu's official BT client, this can only presage for good things.
