recommended apps, not list of everything that exists ;P ...
i'll filter down yours on efficiency and substitution quality.- totalcopy sucks btw, but that wasnt really a secret. Teracopy is considerably more userfriendly than Supercopier. there's another that can perform bytebased copying, and which does not get bothered by unreadable sectors on hyperscratched discs (so that at the very least, the file copies, even if incomplete or partially corrupt. this one would be suited to only the hardcore techy, hence why i will not recommend it) - tinypic: not necessary. specialized gadget software hardly could be considered recommendable. - s.hunter: significantly superseded by gadwin printscreen. - ress.hcker: not really necessary in a list of enlightened recommendations for generic computer users. - defragler: jkdefrag significantly supersedes it in efficiency and usability. - zanti: superseded by pspad (very considerably better than notepad++, pspad is my special warmest recommendation here), notepad++ for being lighter (but very significantly less interesting/featureful, out-of-the-box, so pspad it is) - kIIlbox: Unlocker supersedes it, and can queue-unlock the worst cases at reboot time note: will continue later just for the sake of sharing even more interesting insights for our venerable reader-base... ....Each and every single one of those is recommended...if I do a fresh install then they will be back on just as soon as I can locate the latest versions (well latest freeware version...or the latest commerical copy I own)...
Some I even permanently keep on my flashstick. Honestly Rikki if you add up everything you have suggested then I think my list is in fact shorter...besides it's not just generic apps, they all do something special for me which makes them more usefull to me over their alternatives... Now if you want a list of all the apps I have on my german disks then just ask ;P Edit: What do you recommend over totalcopy then?...I have not seen anything like it... By the way my list is conisderably shorter than it would have been without you recommending stuff...we seem to have very similar tastes in some cases.

Teracopy (more usable than Supercopier, while around as efficient. just grab the last beta, fixes a couple stuffs).
using more efficient, featurful and usable softs is always a cool thing, at least for efficiency's sake... |

Ahh, thanks Rikki. Some really usefull suggestions there which are indeed superior to what I suggested...just I did not know about them and did not see anything in the list on the first page which I thought was better than those I suggested..or there was nothing even in that category.
Edit: Downloaded Unlocker, JKdefrag, Teracopy and Gadwin Printscreen and I must say I am impressed and they are indeed better than the programs I had suggested.

Has anyone mentioned CCleaner? It works GREAT and it's absolutely free!
CCleaner cleans up a BUNCH of temporary files (You can specify what type of things you want deleted, too) And it cleans up the registry.

Well, I'm sure there are people who don't know what CCleaner is.
That's why I'm wondering if anyone mentioned it.

as a file cleaner, CCleaner is very nice. I would NEVER recommend its "registry cleaning" feature to anyone, could easily break your Windows and force it to load an older noncorrupt registry snapshot at reboot. registry manipulation is a task to leave to only known, efficient specialized apps.

I use WinOptimizer 4.0 for a registry cleaner.
I would use WinOptimizer 4 for a temporary file cleaner, but I prefer CCleaner in that area.

Leak-tests results - matousec.com
firewalls compared. Comodo can be a bit TOO chatty for regular users, especially version 3 (with its HIPS Defense+ module). Basically, any firewall other than XP's would be cool. Vista's integrated one is not as bad as XP's |

I have a question: Online Armor Free does not contain all of the features of the full Online Armor version. So is it worth to download free but does not contain all of the features ? Please answer, thanks.

They obviously mean to buy it.
NOD32 has much better detection rate than AVG Free... Especially if you're a bit risky on the internet, lol. But if you're the basic internet user, I'm sure AVG Free should do. Best AV's: NOD32, Kaspersky AV, Bitdefender, and I think those are pretty much the top rated ones.

I tried BitDefender a few years ago and it was pretty awfull...
It locked up my PC on a false positive repeatedly....unlike other AVs it seems it does not halt the process propperly when querying it with the user...which makes it generate a few 1000 exception pop-ups killing any PC. At least that was back on BitDefender 8 or 9. I have used AntiVir, AVG Free and Spybot Search and Destroy for 2 years on a PC which is pretty much permanently connected to the net and I was not hit by anthing really bad, the occasional grunt got through (and was dealth with), but nothing which actually adversely affected my system. Meanwhile my parent's former PC...which hardly spent 24 hours a week online using Norton got hit by Bugbear twice. Kaspersky was also nothing special. NOD32 I have never tried though. The best commerical one I have actually seen in operation (at my dad's work and my preprimary school) has been F-Secure.
