Network being used while idle? What the heck?

For some reason my connection is in use, even though I'm doing absolutely nothing. I know packets are sent back and forth to ensure that your connection stays alive, but this is slowing down my internet a bit and is annoying.

I ran Spysweeper and nothing came up, and I also cleared my cookies and cache.

Anyone have any ideas? I've never had this issue before...

If you are using ZoneAlarm, it phones back home to 4 different servers, even when specifically configured not to.

I didnt recognize the taskbar icons though.

Try Spybot Search and Destroy, fully updated. Could be spyware phonig home, cuz if like I'm thinking, you are using the XP firewall, know it is designed to NOT forbid anything from going from your system to the outside, so spyware could be a concern.

A screenshot of all the running processes would be more useful.

It says Wireless Conncetion. Is it the actual internet connection, or just the WIFI network ?

I've closed every application that could possibly be sending crap, including uTorrent, Spysweeper, etc.

I've been using a Wi-Fi connection for almost a year and never had this either. Despite the router being in the basement and me being in my room on the 3rd floor, I still get a 70-80% strength signal.

Do you have a password on your Wifi? If not, it might be possible someone else is making use of yours.

Okay, and why would that show up in his local machine's network utilization?

I don't really think this is anything to be worried about. Windows uses broadcast traffic across a LAN quite often (NetBIOS). You ever wonder how Network Neighborhood/My Network Places manages to automatically populate itself with all the machines on your LAN? You usually won't even notice the traffic, but you happen to have a link speed low enough for it to cause a blip on the graph. 0.09% of 11Mbit is only about 12K and it's not even using that much consistently.

Run netstat to see who's using your ports.
