Random IE Popups

Recently, my IE has been starting up on its own every once awhile, showing a random porn advertisement(sexsearch, youngteens, passion, etc) even when IE is not running at all.

I tried scanning with ad aware as well as spybot, cleaned everything that is found but the popups are still there.but nothing helped. Anyone knows the cause of these popups? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Tried M$ Antispyware aswell? AdAware, Spybot and M$ Antispyware makes a great combination. Each one finds something that other two doesnt. Also check your IE built-in Popup Blockers allowed-sites list!!!! Most nasties put some very nasty sites to allowed list.

Have you installed anything lately?

Check your firewall settings if there are some wierd programs allowed to access. I clean it completely once in a while.

go into task manager and look for any suspicius process running, if you find one, google it, and you'll find removal instructions.

If you don't find one? look again more closely

More easier way: Check what programs are started in windows startup. (In WinXP, type MSCONFIG in Start/Run and click Start-up page.) Google each of them (Stretch the 'path' column and type the file name, like daemon.exe or zlclient.exe etc...) If there are something you dont want, or google nor you recognise, uncheck it and restart windows. If something isnt working, then you can recheck it.

It's spyware.

For spyware removal use these:

-Ad-aware
-Spybot

For spyware prevention use this:

-SpywareBlaster

For more in-depth analysis of what is running on your system use this:

-HijackThis

I recommend you run HijackThis and give us the log so we know what is running on your system.

And after you get it cleaned out, switch to Firefox or Opera.

Like firefox doesn't have just as many security leaks, I'd say go for opera.

My usual procedure for cleaning up computers:

1) Spyware / Trojans

Quote:
Start -> Run -> msconfig
See if there's any "suspicious" processes being loaded, and uncheck them

(I prefer regedit, but it's safer to use msconfig)
2) Browser Hikack

Quote:
Download the MS Antispyware, and let it reset your browser configurations

Thanks, downloading MS Antispyware now, and cleaned up my startup list. Hmmm, IE Add-ins? where? I use Maxthon usually, btw.
