well, a router is a device that does the job of a modem, plus can direct the traffic to specifical pcs on a network. If you have one, you'll surely now. Routers usually connect to pc's (or hubs) via lan cable, check if your modem is like that. If so, your router ir probably blocking the port used by your client, find out wich port is and configure your router to let traffic in and out.

ermmm you must have an internal winmodem then. Do you plug the telephone cord or a wider one? Just check if the cable connected has 4 copper connectors or 8. If it has 4 connectors it's a phone one and i'm out of ideas then, if it has 8, it's a lan cable and then there must be a router somewhere in your home .

You've just answered your own question. I-chan already explained that you need to open the port on the router.

ok, time to locate data. First you need to know that google is your friend. You need to know wich brand and model is your router. Then, search google for the info on configuring it (i found that info for mine on google in les than 5 minutes, it's easy ). Then you'll probably be able to configure it to open every port, that would be the easier way for you. Alternatively, you'll have to find the ports your programs are using. Some will let you confiugre it, so just like in their configuration will reveal wich port are they using. For others, you'll have to rely again on google. Alternatively, start the programs and try to stablish a connection, open a console (Start->Run, type cmd and hit enter) and type nestat -a -n, and it will show wich ports the programs are using to send info. It will be under "local address", the number after the ":". So four example, you'd see "127.0.0.1:80", then the program would be trying to use that port. Hope this makes sense for you
