best substitute for IE?

what is, according to you folks, the best substitute for IE?

it's a little confusing how on mozilla.org you can choose a variety of browsers; gives me the idea they couldnt get everything right in one build so they made 2?

me neither, everything i need is so conveneintly included in it, and whatever isnt is probably downloadable

way better than ie anyways

all this kinda reminds me of an anecdote from a meeting among microsoft personnel... a representative from microsoft was talking to them and asked, "Who here uses Internet Explorer" to which nobody answered... (keep in mind everyone in the room works for ms ) so... taken offguard, he says "Well, umm, okay. What if we fixed up everything in IE, would you guys be willing to use it?" And ... the response was an eery silence...

the moral of the story, even MS officials know IE = bad compared to better stuff out there

Well kinda, depends if you actually indend to use all the stuff included. Eg// most folks can do without the basic html editor and the irc client etc... The other main component (apart from the browser) is the mail support, but that's also available as standalone.

taking advantage of this thread to clear some of my doubts.

is there any way to disable the address bar pull-down when typing something other than totally disabling history? That's my most hated feature in browsers but I like history.

and is it too prone to crashing? I tried 2 extensions recommended on a really good Firefox faq and all I got were errors everywhere. damn :| , what I used was tabbrowsing preferences and mouse gestures.

I didn't see many reasons to switch, I'm so used to IE and the pull-down-history thing was enough to upset me. so enlighten me

thx for the attention

I haven't heard of problems with those extensions. Are you using 0.9.3 and the extensions from http://update.mozilla.org ?

I tried firefox and i don't really see what's so great about it. Nothing really too special about it. I like the way IE looks so much better. Not to start a lame browser war or anything: just saying its really not what fanboys are cracking it up to be...

well, what did you expect? an orgasm? it's just a browser, but safer, and follows the standards, I'd prefer it over IE but... that tiny little problem with history is too much for me.

baka.

I think I might like Firefox; that download manager seems a plus to me, and it doesn't seem to have the weird pauses/instability that IE has.
oh, and at least I can open up tons of windows without it going nuts.

Since no one said it before I'll do: Opera is also a nice alternative to IE and Firefox. I like the tabbed browsing better and it has its own mail client. There's no extension system as in Mozilla but still all the major features like gestures and mapable keys are there. The one big drawback is that there are quite some pages that don't show up correctly in Opera; this isn't the browsers fault most of the time as it is 100% W3C compliant, but still it's enough to turn people away. It's also not free like Mozilla so most people won't really see it as an alternative. But the browser is at least (definitely) worth a try.
