Mozilla Firefox getting a new default skin

News has surfaced that the next version of Mozilla Firefox will have a new default skin. And I don't think this is good news, check the attached screenshot for a sample of the new default.

I certainly won't be considering an upgrade to 0.9 until I have confirmation you can switch back to the 0.8 skin.

1) It's not done yet. Don't judge it so quickly. In fact, it may or may not be in 0.9. At the latest it will be in the beta release of 1.0.

2) You can easily change the theme. The first thing I do when testing new builds/profiles is change the theme (to Pinball most of the time).

3) Old theme. Arvid was asked repeatedly to relicense Qute so that people could modify it in his absense, or so that developers could have control of how their product looks. He said no. When Thunderbird looked ugly as hell, forum users from mozillazine.org tried modifying it to give new folder icons. He told them to stop. So the developers decided that they needed a theme that they had rights to, and started development on Winstripe (the Windows version of Pinstripe, the default Mac theme). After discussing it privately over e-mail, Arvid posts the private e-mails on the forums and claims he's willing to relicense. In my eyes, it's months too late and he lost all respect I had after posting private e-mails.

So unfortunately, it's no longer a matter of how the theme looks. The author ruined it for everyone.

Personally, I think that all default skins packed with Mozilla before the current Firefox skin were downright horrible. They were one of the main reasons I could never get myselft attached to Mozilla (Modern was the best of the pack, though).

Quark, I'm aware of the whole mess behind this change of skins, but that doesn't change my stance that the "new" skin is currently butt-ugly IMO, and I certainly won't be updating Firefox unless I have a way to continue with the current one.

Eh. New skin looks bleh, but not much different than the old one. I always change skins anyway because I hate white crap. What i really hate though is the fact that there are so few dark skins for moz/firefox, and no really good ones. The best one is skypilot (although it's more of a medium color, not a dark one).

Well, I use Mostly Crystal, so this doesn't affect me. :P

That said, from reading the thread at MozillaZine, it seems Arvid is a bit of a snob. Ben Goodger comes across as an ass, but freedom is extremely important here, and I support him all the way.

FYI,

Apparently there's an issue with both Seamonkey and Firefox currently preventing the installation of themes from websites not on a specific whitelist. Not sure if it'll be fixed before 1.7/0.9 are final, so if you're having trouble installing a skin, download it to the desktop, open the theme manager and drag-and-drop the skin file to the theme manager to get it working (well, at least in Firefox ).

BTW, I did a good test run of the new skin (Winstripe), and after that I had to get a new sig.

I actually like the new theme, though it needs fine tuning. I certainly like it more than Qute.

Of course, no theme stands up to Pinball :P

The new theme needs a LOT of tuning. The author himself said something in the lines of Winstripe being a "0.1 release at best".

It may turn up nicely, but for the moment I think it looks horrible. The main offenders are the way-too-simple 2D icons that don't quite fit in WinXP, and the excess of padding space around the icons.

Yes, the padding is definately a problem with it, especially when you select "Small Icons" -> small should mean small. Hopefully they decide that was a bad idea. Anyway, if the spacing is some people's main concern, anyone knowledgeable of editting the userChrome.css file can fix that easily.
