Just FYI when I was remotely logging in to my Linux box from Cygwin, if I wanted to use X, I had to startx before loggin in to the remote machine, and then IIRC I had to startx again.

The package name is tightvnc. It includes vncserver. You can start and stop vncserver on demand through an ssh connection, or you can start it locally and leave it running indefinately. For internet use, I use:
vncserver :0 -geometry 1270x966 -depth 8 For internal (LAN) use, I just increase the depth to 24

I mean you have to startx on the bash shell of the machine you are remotely logging in from not to.

OK, I think we're dealing with multiple problems here...
On the server, was X running when you tried to start vnc? You can run both at once, but I think the local X likes to use :0. Try :1 if you need to have a local instance running. If you don't have X running locally, then remove the file it suggested and try again. When you connect with the client, you'll need to add :1 after the IP or name address (no space) On the client (I assume that's where you're posting yor XFree log file), I'd hazard a guess that you haven't configured XFree yet. Have you run xf86config yet? If not, that's a good first step. If you're using an nVidia or ATI card, select the VESA driver, not your card's driver (they don't tend to work, but they have updated drivers). Beyond that, you know your hardware better than I do from here . Just answer the questions it asks. Once you get X running, I suggest you go to the appropriate site (either nVidia or ATI) and get their drivers... their instructions are actually quite good (I've used both).EDIT: Oh, wow... the machine with that log has an S3 Virge... hmm... I had some difficulty getting that to work with non-vesa drivers... but then I think vesa does everything linux would know what to do with that card anyways. Stick with the vesa drivers
