Xp Pro - MP3 Files In Use

I have this problem with windows xp pro, everytime I want to move or rename an mp3 file, it says the file is in use. Of course I am not running it in anything what so ever, and it has been happening ever since an install in march.

I looked on tweakXP.com, and solved the same problem for avi files, but it didnt solve it for mp3's.

Its really quite a pain in the ass, as I have to use another third party tool to get the files renamed/moved after a reboot.

Edit: Ive searched: google/ms knowledge base/xp public news group

Do you have WMP9 installed? What do your settings for that look like? You might have the auto-organizing enabled.

I had exactly same problem with MP3 and AVI. It had something to do with file corruption. (if there was even slight corruption, but file was still usable, W2K and WXP coulnt remove it.) AVI got solved with a patch, but mp3, no....

It's possibly something to do with the XP built in preview thing
Try running "regsvr32.exe /u shmedia.dll"

lord_maud_dib: I actually did try it in safe mode as well, a few mins after posting. It did not solve the problem.

Flare: Thanks, I just removed about every setting in WMP9. I will also look around winamp.

Kane-Sama: Does the computer need to be restarted after that? I just tried it, and it didnt work, I will reboot right now and see if it did.

Edit: Nope, nothing worked ><. I looked over the view settings etc. Still nothing

A long shot, but are you uploading MP3s to anyone? That would do it aswell.

Have you tried using the command prompt to move the files? Explorer may have the auto-preview enabled for mp3s. Have you tried moving without imapi.exe running? (open Task Manager > Process List and end imapi.exe ; reboot if you are going to burn a CD) These have worked for me when I tried to move some mp3s before.

Yes, and it works only on a safe boot. I have windows cd burning support disabled, so imapi.exe is not running.

Are the files Read Only? If they are, uncheck them.

No, but strangly all the folders on the drive are all read-only. I removed that, but it still has the same problem on my other drive aswell.

hmm i had that happen to me once with an avi file. Easiest way i found to delete it was to boot in Linux. I used Slackware's Live CD (now known as SLAX which is only around 200MB) to boot in linux and delete the bugger. see when Windows acts like a dumba$$ you use Linux to repair its problem :P

I found a little tool, GiPo@MoveOnBoot that does the trick for now

Have you tried checking that your user 'owns' the files? It may be that you set permissions on them from thier parents which excluded other users from being able to modify them (perhaps to prevent a sibling or parent removing them by accident), and on re-install the permissions haven't transferred..... just a thought.
