Does anyone know whether the new mozilla release 1.7 rc2 i think has started using firefox as its browser ?

Firefox is the official name for that division of the gecko code. So when they officially retire the suite, it will only be Firefox and Thunderbird (and the lesser parts, i.e. Sunbird). So no, though Firefox 0.9 is in heavy development right now and should be out some time in June.

As a side note, if anyone here ever uses nightly builds from mozilla.org, stay away from the trunk now! It's in horrible shape...
