iexplore.exe using 100% CPU usage

This problem has occurred recently.

When I try and start Internet Explorer in Windows XP Pro the browser hangs. In the task manager I find that iexplorer.exe is using 100% of the CPU usage.

I try and end the process of iexplorer but the program doesn't close.

When I try and restart or logoff it takes a very long time to do this. (Probably from the high CPU usage)

I already ran ad-aware and spybot search and destory but no spyware was found.

Any ideas on how to fix this?

Run a virus check. Backup data. You may have a nasty virus.

As was stated run a virus scan, BUT also go into your bios and underclock your ram (If you have the option). I had a stick of ram go bad/flakey and had the same exact thing happen....Replaced the ram and all was well....

it's never happened to me

you have a trojan that takes all of the cpu cycles... you have to go in safe mode and check it it's slow too

are you sure it's iexplorer and not the similary named iexpiorer? (capital I looks like an L).
because iexpiorer is a nasty trojan that does what you're describing...and norton crappyvirus' backgroundscan doesn't detect it properly. ;P

I found out the root cause of the problem.

The Index.dat file in the temporary internet files was corrupted.

The file had to be deleted and recreated again in IE.
