Re: Please help me network my comps
First off, make sure both computers have network cards. Now im still stuck on dialup, but I think you can share the internet if both comps are connected to the hub via a network cable (someone correct me if im wrong here)Then depending on what OS both comps are using, it may be very hard or very easy to get this to work right.

Re: Please help me network my comps
U dont need a hub to share the internet connection! U only need a crossover cable to link both PCs. If u have XP just use the Wizard

Re: Please help me network my comps
Well wouldnt it be easier to just hook both comps up via the hub since it provides the internet anyway? Plus I really dont see whats so great about crossover cables.
Edit: I think a setup like this would be the best one to have.

Re: Please help me network my comps
You need:
- 2 NICs(Network interface card), 1 in each PC - 3 Cat5 cables(Netwrok cables, also known as patch cables) - 1 Router 1. Connect the modem to the WAN port on the router using one cable. 2. Connect both PCs to the router using the other cables. 3. Coniguire the router using the instructionmanual that came with the router There that set up Internet connection sharing. Now if you want to share files and do LAN gaming do this: 1. Depending on operating system set up network trough OS. I have XP and 2000 on a network together. XP, as already said comes with a Network setup wizard. For 2000(and below im assuming) all you had to do was set a name for the computer and put it in a workgroup(which you can also name), and do the same to the other computer. And you are complete.

Re: Please help me network my comps
You need: a network adapter in every computer.
Way one: computer A is connected to the cable modem, shares the connection with computer B -> so computer A needs 2 network adapters, one for the cable modem and one for the connection to the other computer. To link the computers, you need eighter a crossover cable or a hub or switch (whatever is cheaper). The other possibility is to use a cable router, which is connected to the cable modem (works also with ADSL modems) and delivers the internet to both computers. Advantages: a) you don't need a 2nd network adapter in computer A. b) you don't have to turn on computer A so computer B gets access to the internet. c) the cable router may have built-in firewall features. Recently, I bought a Netgear MR814v2 Wireless Router, which does all the things mentioned above and also serves as an access point for WLAN. It costs about 80 EUR, so if you can afford it, you should consider it.

Re: Please help me network my comps
If your modem connects to your computer via ethernet, there's basically two "easy" choices:
1. Get a router that can be set to automatically connect to your ISP, and has support for DCHP or similar. Get one network card for each computer. Connect each computer to the router by a standard ethernet cable. Connect the modem to the router (and not to either computer). Enjoy. 2. Get two network cards for whatever computer is the "main" one and will have the modem attached. Get one network card for your other computer. Connect the two computers together with a crossover cable between one of the network cards on the "main" computer and the only network card on the other one. Connect the modem to the "main" computer with a regular ethernet cable into the other network card. The advantage of #1 is that either computer can connect to the internet without needing the "main" computer to be turned on. Obviously, the advantage of #2 is that it's cheaper -- but every time you want to use the internet on the "other" computer, the "main" one will need to be booted, and do all the connecting to your ISP. If your modem connects via USB, you won't need the extra network card for option #1, but you'll need a router that can attach via USB -- I'm not sure there are many of these. Rand. D'oh! I didn't notice that ammoQ had already answered with the same suggestions, so feel free to ignore this one. |

Re: Please help me network my comps
Rand, I'm not even sure if it is much cheaper. It's the router vs. one network adapter (if you go the cross-over-cable way; if you consider a hub or switch, prices will likely be equal).

Re: Please help me network my comps
I'm not sure abt cable, so i'm gonna refer to a dsl setup (should be the same)
1. Plug a phone line from your wall socket to the line rj11 slot of your modem 2. Plug another phone line from your phone socket of the modem to your phone 3. Plug the rj45 cable from your modem to the WAN port of the router 4. Connect the comps thru the ports on your router 5. Configure the router 6. Enjoy

Re: Please help me network my comps
If you connect the modem to a hub, both computers will need their own IP address (costs money). Using a router avoids this problem.

Re: Please help me network my comps
thats posssible if one of the computers is a server connected to main internet then shared to the lan ( but you cant when directly connecting the high speed internet to the hub)

Re: Please help me network my comps
Routers are cool and all. Good for automaticly logging into my DSL service. The bad thing it I have tend to have connection problems. I don't know much about network stuff yet, but other people sometimes have problems connecting to me. The router has it's own IP address along with each comp. There's something with people that want to connect to me, and it never works. ie. direct connect through AIM. Even when I forward ports to my com's IP, it still doesn't work. Maybe I'm not configured right, but I do believe that there is no solution if both people are behind routers. Just thought I'd add this into your decision.

Re: Please help me network my comps
I have the exact same setup you need. I have a cable modem which connects to my Linksys router. the router connects into my hub along with the computers on my network. set up the router for DHCP and bingo...your up and running
