Arrow Speed up my dial-up connection

Could anyone point me in the direction of any decent ad-ware or free-ware utilies to speed up my ancient 56k dial-up connection. And please don't brag about ISDNL or broadbrand as those wonders have yet to make it to my rural dwelling.

Re: Speed up my dial-up connection

I remember when I try to make my 56k modem to go faster. There's only so much that can be done.

You can give RAS Accelerator.

Here's a guide for slow speeds.

Re: Speed up my dial-up connection

If you live near the station, the max ppl usually get is 5-10 kbps. If you live 20 miles from it (like me), you get 2-4 kbps. Thats just the way it is.

Re: Speed up my dial-up connection

well.... if you get another phone line and another modem, you can easily use multilink, which will combine the speed of both modems..... (I would do so, but phone lines are quite expensive around here)

Re: Speed up my dial-up connection

Well.... multilink allows to do 2 phone calls at the same time and, using 2 modems, make them behave like one..... anyway, here's how to do it:

you need 2 modems, each one plugged to each line, now, you can connect as you would always do, but....

in windows, in the connection properties (dunno exactly how to get there ) there's an "use multilink" checkbox, once you check it, you can add the devices you will use for the connection, and when yu use it, it will boost up the speed..... this is possible in linux as well, but you need to enable multilink support in the kernel.... further than that I do not know how to make it work in linux (maybe some kind of multilink toos like the ones used for UDF writing?)

Re: Speed up my dial-up connection

I really do not know, but as far as I know, software compression gives more data per second, and in my case, makes my craooy dial-up connection slightly more stable

Re: Speed up my dial-up connection

You can only do multilink if your ISP supporst it, which most don't due to the price of Broadband etc.

Re: Speed up my dial-up connection

No. 52 or 53 IIRC. For some reason, you can NEVER hit 56k with a 56k modem. I cant remember why tho......maybe Im wrong........

Re: Speed up my dial-up connection

112 116 what's hte difference

Yes that is true to a degree. You don't tend to be able to get the full 56k unless you are on a digital line already, as when there is noise on the line, it'll connect at the fastest 'stable' rate. Normaly somewhere between 40 and 50Kbps.

Re: Speed up my dial-up connection

someone told me that it is due to the FCC rules, that say that 56k connections produce noise in the hpone lines, so that's why they lower it a pair of kbps

Re: Speed up my dial-up connection

well the highest I've reached so far is 52kbps...

so a multilink is beneficial if you have two phone lines... well is it a single ISP or there should also be 2?
