Angry WindowsXP Corruption

It seems files on my computer are corrupted. When I try to get into WindowsXP, it claims that <WindowsRoot>\System32\hal.dll is corrupted and that it needs to be reinstalled. How do I install the said file? I would have asked Microsoft, but it demanded a product ID, which I can't get.

Re: WindowsXP Corruption

IIRC, it's a DX file, so it should bo okay by (re)installing DX9...
it may have to uninstall your current version first

Re: WindowsXP Corruption

The HAL.DLL file is the dynamic link library for the HAL (Hardware Abstraction Layer). This is a very critical feature of the NT core (it's one of the features that gives NT its stability). To fix it you can go to the Windows XP recovery console (from Windows setup, accessed by booting from the XP CD). This site explains the process. You can also re-install Windows XP or install over your previous installation.

Re: WindowsXP Corruption

I did a "reinstall" of windowsXP, which solved the hal problem, but now all the hardware that I had installed demand drivers. The reinstallation seems to have left everything other than windows files intact, anyway to recover the drivers without having to get each individual disk and reinstall?

Re: WindowsXP Corruption

If anything like this happens again, you can probably find the dll online (just search hal.dll or whichever file it is on google). Save it to a disk from another computer, go to recovery console, and put it back in place. That way nothing else should be overwritten.
