WinXP Networking Problem
OK, I'm kind of at my wits end here.
I've been helping my friend build his new computer, and we're trying to network them together so I can send him files and stuff. NIC drivers are set up, IPs are fine, we can ping each other, we are both on the same workgroup, etc. My PC: IP: 10.0.13.17 Subnet: 255.255.255.0 Workgroup: LEETNESS_LTD Comp name: L33tboxen His PC: IP: 10.0.13.38 Subnet: 255.255.255.0 Workgroup: LEETNESS_LTD Comp name: Masamune I've shared a folder on his PC, and am trying to access it on mine, so I can send him files and stuff. However, when I try to access his PC (Network Connections -> Entire Nework -> Microsoft Windows Network -> LEENESS_LTD -> Masamune), I get a message saying I don't have permission to view his resources. When I try to go directly to the shared folder by typing \\masamune\stuff in My Computer, it tells me it can't find the shared folder, presumably because it can't browse his PC. We have no net connection. We are both using WinXP Pro, and are both admin-level users. Any ideas? I'm stumped.

Re: WinXP Networking Problem
You have to set permissions with winxp pro, otherwise windows automatically blocks all network users.

Re: WinXP Networking Problem
With folders that don't normally allow read access to everyone (ie: those in My Documents), you'll have to tweak the ACLs for both the folder and the share so they're identical. For example if UserA has read and write access in the share permissions, give UserA read and write access in the folder permissions as well.

Re: WinXP Networking Problem
I found that all I had to do was shut off ZoneAlarm. :P
I still couldn't access any of the share's on his machine, but I could put stuff into Shared Documents, which worked well enough.

Re: WinXP Networking Problem
I solved a similar issue on windows 2000 adding the NetBeui protocol on both machines.
As for Zone Alarm, go to firewall settings, main tab, click advanced, check "this computer is an ICS/NAT gateway" write your IP address. That way the traffic won't be blocked within your Lan. |
