help my computer kills me!
*hehehehe*
... ... Ok.... well i've experienced a lot of slowdowns on my rig although it should be waaaay faster... i don't really know where the problems come from but i guess it has either something to do with my memory being filled pretty often or maybe the fact that i got myself a new 80 Gb HD ... i'm not quite sure... but my problem is that it takes hours for windows to open or to load the internet explorer for example... the thing is that i don't have much stuff going on in the background... norton anti virus/ internet security & icq are the only ones... i run on windows xp and i got a 2.4 Ghz CPU + 512 MB (SD)Ram + ati radeon 9700 pro.... my computer isn't that slow as soon as something has loaded up... but it takes like half an hour until i see the title screen of half life 2 ... even winamp takes hours to start... please help me... my rig is gonna kill me because of my boredom... as i said i guess it's either a memory problem or something with my new HD .... well .. .that's not it cause i also got another problem... ![]() problem 2: my burner is killing my cd's when i try to burn stuff.... it's a ricoh MP7163A (16x10x32) ... it shouldn't be that bad but i guess this problem has also something to do with my memory problem... cause for example when i wanna burn one of my movies (avi's) on a cd in mpeg (so that my dvd player can show it on the tv) then it simply hangs when the conversion from avi to mpeg is running... but it also has problems to burn other things like files on a cd... dunno why though... i got the newest drivers and all... all done :guitar: if you need any extra info then please ask i'm pretty desperate :cuss2: anyway... bye ![]() edit: btw i use nero for burning my movies Last edited by hybrid23; September 13th, 2003 at 21:07. |

Re: help my computer kills me!
Ok, check that your hard disk is on Ultra DMA mode, it might be that your hard disk is set on PIO mode for some reason.
And what is your motherboard and did you install the chipset driver? (like VIA 4 in 1 or SIS AGP and IDE driver)

Re: help my computer kills me!
Control Panel > System
On System Properties click the hardware tab. On the hardware tab click device manager. On device manager expand the IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers. Double Click on Primary IDE Channel if your HD is on the Primary IDE Channel. On the Primary IDE Channel click the Advance Setting Tab. There you will find the current transfer mode.

Re: help my computer kills me!
Yeah after you change it you should receive one of those "hardware change must reboot" pop up.
I have similar problem like you, after i plug or unplug a HD, windows xp only runs on PIO mode for my main HD, if your hd still in pio mode after reboot well you MIGHT have to reinstall your xp, that's what i did. Or you could wait for someone else to help you here.

Re: help my computer kills me!
My friend's XP slowed much, but when he installed 5 antivirus programs and removed all 200 viruses, his PC speeded up and now it's about 20 times faster than before!
