Re: Mp3 compression

MP3s are already compressed. You are unlikely to get basicaly any further compression on them from RAR or ZIP. It's like trying to Zip a Zip

I don't encode to MP3 anymore. I use MPC at 160KBps VBR

Never heard of MPC either.

I use FLAC at max compression.

Re: Mp3 compression

http://www.musepack.tk/

For information about MPC.

I use dBpower amp to create MPC from audio cd.
And you can play it on winamp (there's a winamp plugin for that)

Re: Mp3 compression

It's a command line encoding utility. You encode using various switches, or you get a frontend for it.

What kind of compression ratio do you get from MPC?
(provide an example of before/after file sizes.)

I use dbPowerAmp. Compressing to wma format @ 80kbps will typically reduce the resulting file to 2/3 of the original mp3 (128kbps) size without much difference in sound quality.

Re: Mp3 compression

I don't recompress MP£s as you lose too much quality.
The track 'The Music of the Night' from Phantom of the Opera, a 5 minute 41 second long track, is 9 megs big at 'Insane' quality, which is 224KBps VBR.
Adam F -The Tree Knows Everything (feat. Tracey Thorn): 4m26, 6.22Mb 'Xtreme' (196KBps)
James - Laid: 3m13, 4.01Mb 'Standard' (173.4KBps)
KLF - 3AM (Live): 9m24, 10.49Mb 'Standard' (155.8KBps)
Finaly, Depeche Mode's 'World in My Eyes': 4m25, 5.78Mb Standard (182.4KBps)
As you can see, even with the 'Standard' profile, the bitrate doesn't stick at 160KBps. I prefer it simply because I never get the tinny feel I do from MP3 up to ~192 KBps. I'm not too concerned with the filesize, as I have shed loads of space, I'm more concerned with the quality of the final file, while being a reasonable size if you get what I mean.
I don't particularly want to expend 400Mb for a CDs worth of music in APE (lossless) format, and at the same time, I'd rather not encode it all at 96KBps or 128KBps MP3 and lose too much quality on it. MPC 'Standard' I find gives me the best tradeoff between filesize and sound quality.

Re: Mp3 compression

Then try typing MPCEnc /? in the command line, like you would for any app without a frontend. Jeebus
