Re: Linux on Windows

Well probably the easiest way is to get a copy of Virtual PC, or some other pc emulator and install linux onto that.

Re: Linux on Windows

VMWare Workstation 4 works quite well, but it is ~$400.

Re: Linux on Windows

Yeah, but you have to recompile them on the Windows box. It's only (partial) source compatibility, not binary compatibility.

That why i said that it depends on the program, there are a lot of programs that have precompiled binaries using this method, ie: xfree, mplayer(or at last old versions), etc

hi!

Good and useful programs are normally ported to Windows. Atleast I don't know any popular program which exist just for Linux.

Re: Linux on Windows

mPlayer, for one. And Quanta Plus, for another.

hi!

I've never heared of these tools.

But a short research in the net showed me that there is a Windows version of MPlayer :

ftp://ftp.mplayerhq.hu/MPlayer/releases/win32-beta/

For Quanta Plus, it seems to be a HTML-editor, I prefer NotePad for HTML-editing, but there are also other professional tools for HTML-development under Windows available. So a port of this program isn't really required, or ?

Re: Linux on Windows

Konqueror. KDE's integrated file manager/web browser is much more advanced than MS's explorer. For example, Konqueror can display little preview images instead of icons; this works for Textfiles, HTML, PDF, many image types and even KOffice files. Another example: Put a whole website with several linked HTML-files into a Zip-File. You can browse into that Zip file with both Explorer (WinXP) and Konqueror, and open a single file. But what about relative links between the HTML files? In Explorer, they do not work. In Konqueror, they work.

Re: Linux on Windows

Why not just download a copy of a Linux Distro and dual boot? Why emulate it? Linux is free is it not?

Re: Linux on Windows

So you can run 2 OSes at the same time and switch between them without spending a minute or two rebooting.

And Quanta is an HTML editor. It is geared towards dynamic pages with PHP. In Windows, I use UltraEdit, which is a fine editor in its own right, but Quanta just works better for PHP.

Re: Linux on Windows

Win4Lin only supports Windows 95, 98 and ME. If you want to run 2000 or XP, you need VMWare Workstation.
