I use cooledit pro myself and I like it a lot as it can do lots of great things (but its expensive to buy), others to consider are Sound Forge (very good also + you can buy a cheap cut down version), I've also heard good things about goldwave (shareware).
But it depends on what your using it for as to which you should get, cooledit has lots of features for cleaning up sound and also has a 64 track recorder built in which arn't worth paying for if you will never use them, your best bet is to try a few out and see which you like the best as there all available in demo form.

Re: best software for audio editing?

Goldwave fits me perfectly. If you're into free software, you can try Audacity.
