I want to dual boot windows XP and 98, but im not sure how to setup the XP boot manager. heres what i did
1. resized XP partition 2. made fat32 partition and formated 3. booted into dos (XP partition is NTFS so the fat32 partition defaulted to c) 4. installed 98 5. used fdisk to set the active partition to enable XP. 6. used windows XP recovery console to try to remake the boot.ini file, but it didnt work. And that brings me to where i am now. Completely lost. btw both partitions are primary partitions. |

Re: Dual Boot windows XP + 98
You can still boot 98 if u do a new installation of xp from 98. Just press F8 when booting
(i used to do that but then i realized i didn't touch the 98 in 2 months... so i killed it)

I installed windows XP before i installed windows 98 (i got a new 80 GB hard drive and used maxtors software to copy. I used partition magic to shrink the partition and made a new fat32 partition). Basically, my question is how can i add a new windows 98 install after windows XP is installed. Right now i switch between OS's by changing the active partition.

Re: Dual Boot windows XP + 98
Yea you have to have 98 installed first . I dual boot 98/2k and thats the only way it will work.the Fat32 partition has to be the boot partition, won't work the other way round. Especially with XP, since it is completely devoid of a user friendly or even non user friendly DOS layer.

Re: Dual Boot windows XP + 98
There's a program called "SystemCommander" which does the work quite well.... but i suspect these kind of program could mess up partitions
(my partitions were damaged once and i just have to find something to blame on )

Re: Dual Boot windows XP + 98
AFAIK, Win98 should be installed first and then the XP. But the question is, do I must install XP in other directory? My C drive is fat32, formatted for Win98 and I don't think it suitable for XP, anyone know
?

Re: Dual Boot windows XP + 98
I'm pretty sure you can run win xp with a fat32 formatted drive. As of where to install win xp, I'm not sure

Well, there are actually 2 solutions:
a. Install Win 98 first (must be installed on primary partition of hdd 0 -or, if you want it on hdd 1, you should disconnect hdd0 while installing Win 98). Since Windows 98 is up and running, you can install Windows XP and it will configure boot menu automatically. b. Install BootManager program (very convenient is you use Linux or many OS's). For example, I use BootManager which manages 5 OS's on 3 hard drives. Have a nice boot! )

Re: Dual Boot windows XP + 98
It's better to install xp in another partition since both 98 and XP uses the folder "Program Files." XP runs on fat32 but 98 doesn't run on ntfs, so don't convert to it after installing xp. 98 will not be able to access ntfs volumes on its own (there are programs for 98 to use ntfs).

Re: Dual Boot windows XP + 98
gameman733 was doing it right the first time.
1) Install WinXP on NTFS partition 1 2) Install Win98 on FAT32 partition 2. Since Win98 doesn't know about NTFS, it sees partition 2 as C: He's just missing step three: 3) Install something like GRUB or XOSL to choose which OS to boot

Re: Dual Boot windows XP + 98
I thought that you couldn't have 2 different formats on a single hd... I guess I'll install win98 then on my new comp so I can play old games. I wasn't going to do it cuz I thought that you had to have both partitions in the fat32 format which I don't want
.

Re: Dual Boot windows XP + 98
The XP installer will give you options as to where to install, weather to format that partition as ntfs, etc... That is, provided 98 is allready installed and the xp installer sees it, otherwise it can't tell there is an os already there.

Actually WinXP installer is vey far from perfertion in making and formatting partitions. I would do it this way. Very cheap, easy and fast. By the way, answer to a question: "How do I make my Win98 see NTFS drives?" is also there.
