Question Bad Sectors on Diskette: How to fix?

I have a diskette with two bad sectors on it. The diskette contains one file that takes up the whole diskette.

When I try to fix the diskette with Norton Disk Doctor I get the message that there is not enough room on the diskette to move the data.

Has anybody got any ideas on how to repair the file?

You may also be able to get the data off the disk by using a recovery software like BadCopy Pro, it does cost to buy it though so I don't know if that would be an option.

Re: Bad Sectors on Diskette: How to fix?

yeah, try using windows to scan the disk. I have had good luck with the disk checker in win2k/XP. If you right click on the floppy drive and go to propertiess, on the "tools" tab, theres a button that says "Check Now."

Re: Bad Sectors on Diskette: How to fix?

The problem is that in the sector the data is in is damaged. Whatever data that can be salvaged has to be put somewhere else since disk checkers mark the entire block of disk as bad, regardless of any good sectors with the bad in that block.

Unfortunately, since it's just one file, you can't make space for it and the OS whines about being unable to copy the file and stuff.

This case is pretty bleak. I've heard of low level disk utilites that aren't as whiny as regular copy software. your best bet is with them.

Re: Bad Sectors on Diskette: How to fix?

There's this small app called 'SuperFormat'. Basically, it can format your diskette to 1.7MB (1.66MB to be exact) and has this function where it'll cover up/erase any bad sector it comes in contact with. There's no official site but you're welcome to search for it on google or yahoo! (just type in 'FAIZ SuperFormat' in the search box). It's a small download too (20kb).

I'm not using Win2k or Win XP.

I already used scandisk to fix the diskette, but it can't repair the problem.

Re: Bad Sectors on Diskette: How to fix?

It can't. Simply because it can't find a place to put the salvagable data in. It's not possible by ordinary means that I know of.

Bad_Burn: ERASE a bad sector??? That's ridiculous! I would NEVER want to erase a bad sector mark! And there is no way to repair a physical defect.
