Is there a good free or very cheap data recovery application?

I've been trying to restore a certain directories that were erased when I used maxblast3 to copy a very partition to another, and I was wondering if there is a free or very cheap method of recovering my lost directory. Help would be greatly appreciated.

You might want to try EasyRecovery from my 'ol faithful company Ontrack. Everything has a trial version...

Thanks for all the replies. So far, the best results have come from this program called virtual lab which requires you to buy quota for > 100 dollar prices. I'll give the other software a try, so far they haven't matched the results of Virtual Lab . I wish I knew a little more about the recovery process so I could do this for free on my own.

edit:
I've had a small measure of success with a package called "GetDataBack" by Runtime Software. It's 69 dollars for the FAT partition version and it gives me better results than virtual lab! I'm in love
