Does it just all of a sudden start moving in one direction, and then stop when you move the mouse a little bit? If so, I've had that problem several times. Either your mouse is going out, or needs cleaning.

Yeah, that happened with my old Microsoft Com port mouse before it gave out... Switched to logitech wireless optical and all worked out fine. Ironically, the mouse started working again after it was installed on another computer after 3 months.

If it was an optical mouse (which it wasn't according to your recetn post, but this is usefull info anyways) it is a sign that i is burning out. They die after about 1-2 years of hard use. I used to know a guy who got an optical whn they were the new thing, he was played starcraft in torunaments and made money at it, and fried his new mouse over the course of the summer. Luckily for him the warranty kicked in and he got a new one for free. I expect that he will get free mice very year for the rest of his life.

The weirdest mouse problem I ever had was when the secretary at my work had her mouse go out. Well, all it really needed was cleaning, but I decided to give her a new one, since her's didn't have a scroll wheel. So... I pulled a MS Optical Mouse out of stock and brought it up to her. It didn't work. Tried an IntelliMouse... no worky. Logitech optical something... nope. Finally found a cheap Memorex optical that worked. The weird thing is, all of those mice worked fine on my PC. I tried cleaning her PS/2 port and resetting the BIOS... nothing.
Weird.
