ffdshow

Do you find any advantage on using FFdshow over the DivX 3 - 5 codecs? Besides the filters, that is...
I've had some problems with XviD files so i just disabled ffdshow for XviD, but DivX seems to be working fine through it and i wonder if it has any advantades over the DivX codec

1) It registers more MPEG4 FourCCs then the standard DivX;
2) Lots of options to play around;
3) It's not as processor-intensive as DivX (very important if you are below 1GHz like me);
4) Some pretty interesting and useful built-in functions, like the de-interlacer and the overlay.

Btw, what its overlay?
Also, when i tried to put my own made subtitles to a movie virtualdub (with the subtitler filter) made the subtitles really small (almost impossible to read) and it didn't matter what size of letter i used in the subtitles (with substation alpha). Any way to solve this problem?

The overlay is a hardware accelerated 2d surface IIRC

I don't bother doing it that way. It cause more problems than I could be bothered with. I just rip the subs and leave then in the same directory as the film for MPlayer Classic to pick up.

So, that only happend if the subtitle in the same folder. What I want is to merge the subtitle into the movie, is that possible ? I want to make it into mpeg, NOT into VCD.

One thing I forgot to mention. If you copy xvid.dll to the ffdshow folder, you can tell it to use either the standard decoder (libavcoded) or xvid's for each format. Check the screenshot.

IIRC it's a decoder library from FFmpeg project:

.....Why? Mpeg 1 files are poorly compressed and low quality...

As i said sometimes people want to see the encoded movie in a stand alone dvd player, and until the divx players with dvd included be popular people will have to stick to vcds.

Also there is the fact that VCD uses MPEG for it's video... if you look on a VCD, there should be a rather large .DAT file, I forget where exactly, that contains the video. Copy it to your HD, rename it to .mpg, and it works fine.

For some reason, the FFX movie ripped from the DVD have better quality in mpeg. If I burn it into SVCD or VCD the quality lower than it has before.

The FFX movie ripped will be MPEG-2 I'd think. S/VCD is MPEG-1

Actually converting mpeg to .dat and .dat to mpeg doesn't alter the quality of the encoded movie as it doesn't reencode it. It just change the name of the file. Thats all.

Maybe you had a mpeg2 and convert it to vcd (mpeg1) Thats why you see a difference in the quality. Or the encoded mpg movie had a better resolution than the needed in a vcd.

Uh, yeah ... sorry forgot to mentioned that. I didn't realized it until I check the file that it was converted into mpeg2. This what I want, converting DVD into mpeg2.

We are in the same place. Both of us want to merge subtitles in a mpg but dont know why. the onyl one i know of is virtual dub but as i said the subtitler filter makes the subtitles really really small. Even if i change the size of the font when doing the subtitles.
