You need a DVD decoder installed to play DVDs via Directmedia. I install PowerDVD, then use MPlayer Classic.... infact, I had to rip all my DVDs as my DVD drive can't sustain anything like a constant speed.

I use powerdvd and its really good. I have tried others but this is the most stable and with better options.

Lord Kane, i tried to use Mplayer classic to play dvds but it keeps telling me i dont have some filters installed and that some pins could not be readed. Do you know what filters? I even tried in the options menu but although i select the filters it keeps the same.

First off, a codec is a COder DECoder. WMP, WinDVD and PowerDVD are players. Second when you are using WMP, you are using the codec installed by one or the other player. WMP has no native DVD codec (unless you count the PowerDVD based one which you can buy for XP)

Power DVD is one of about 3 that I have used, and must saw compared to the others works flawless for me.

Erm, then you may want to check out DVD2SVCD It can make _AWESOME_ quality svcd's if you have the cpu to back it up.

I rip them to DivX/Xvid movies with AC3 sound using a combination of DVD Decryptor (To rip the files from the DVD), FlaskMPEG (To convert the video to Xvid and extract the AC3 stream) and VirtualDub (to slap the AC3 and the avi together). I'll get superb quality with 5.1 sound on a single 700Mb CD.

Yes, SVCD movies always come in pairs of discs. I personally prefer DivX but some people like them.

Long movies require two CDs though, as quality suffers horribly trying to fit it into 700 MB. Movies like Black Hawk Down are pretty long (2 hr 24 mins) and I find it's impossible to fit it on a single CD without sacrificing a lot of quality.
