What was Microsoft Whistler?

I read on my mouse box about a Windows OS called Whistler. Was it one of those things never released in the US, cause I think the mouse was made in Japan

Microsoft doesn't only release stuff in Japan like Squaresoft does. Whistler is the codename for Windows XP.

but it said Whistler and XP on the same box. But it could of been Whistler/XP too, making the whole question different.

Yes, but Whistler IS Windows XP. It's like the Pentium 4 is also known as the Northwood or Willamette. I believe Windows 98's codename is Chicago.

hmm...chicago....home of the deep dish pizza

Now I know why the company went out of business. They thought Whistler and XP were 2 different things

Whistler XP is supposed to be either an upgrade to windows XP like a second edition or a whole new OS. But very similar to XP. It should be out in a couple Years. I got my info from PC Magazine.

Did you check that link that Ipswitch posted? Whistler IS Windows XP. I have said it numerous times already. Longhorn is the next Windows.

Uhh.... I think you are kinda wrong there.
Win2k was NT 5. XP (Whistler) is NT 5.1. Longhorn will be NT 6. It's more like the jump from between NT4 - 2k rather than 2k-XP, or 95-98).

isnt blackcomb to be NT6? :/
Would strike me as a little odd to jump a major version number with longhorn being more like "WinXP SE"

That's just the point. It's not. It's a completely new build of the kernel. On the face it may seem similar, just like NT4 and Win 95 seemed similar on the face, but were actualy vastly different. 10- minutes looking at screenies of a beta does not allow y to see under the bonnet.

Yeah Kane, and those shots of Longhorn are not even Beta yet. The Alpha build of Longhorn looks a lot like XP still. Longhorn isn't expected to come out for a couple years yet anyways. I'm sure it will be totally different and exciting when it finally comes out.
