BIOS Update

Hi guys.I'm curious as to the nature and risk involved in using a BIOS update for your motherboard.I actually have a friend who preety much messed up his motherboard with a BIOS update. He has packed up the system and hopes to get a new motherboard in the near future(He's short on cash).I myself was thinking of getting one.I use AMI BIOS from American Megatrends. But I don't know the nature of the risks involved.I've heard of people who used a BIOS update and didn't have any problem, but my friends problem is still fresh in my mind.

Well I update my BIOS whenever there is a new one released and have never had a problem.
But really you should only update it if you need to, like if you want to use a new processor that isn't supported by your current BIOS.
Just be careful, don't do it in a thunderstorm or anything.

Tips on flashing BIOS-nyo:

1. Make sure there's no (un)scheduled power interruption in your area when you do this-nyo.

2. Try to download the right version from the motherboard manufacturer's site-nyo, and MAKE SURE of it-nyo.

3. As much as possible, flash from a FAT32 partition on the hard disk-nyo. That'll eliminate the possibility of a bad flash because of a corrupted floppy-nyo.

4. Use the latest flashing util from the motherboard manufacturer's site-nyo.

To make it easy, just pray to god to leave the lights on for 1 minute. Then you'll be rather safe

Whatever you do, do not use one of those Windows OS flashing tools. If you remember a little while back, I had to make a emergency recovery disk just to get my PC out of POST. After that, I used the DOS flasher 2 times now, and no problems

Yep. Your motherboard may ID as ECS, but really it's a subdivision of ECS which makes cheaper boards, like ours, but strangely I had to pay $100 for mine..

most bios flashers allow you to back up the BIOS before te actual flash happens. If you have an Award bios, it will allow you to

I know. But I'm under the impression that an update upgrades and brings new features to your BIOS setting.

5 hours? Isn't that a bit too long for a Linux guru? I mean, I can already write a whole term paper in those 5 hours.
