major lag- Win2000

switched to 2000 from xp.....
because i was curious about 2000....

anyways after updating windows (finished right before leaving for school)
once i came back home and restarted my computer.... it took soooo long for it to shut down/restart
before it didn't (before i updated)

why did this happen??

problably because of disk fragmentation

use speed disk or disk defragmenter

it happens even if I defrag my hard drive and I use disk keeper daily

strange. well anyway, as all Windowses, win2k also has a bunch of USELESS shutdown and startup stuff by default, so you should grab some registry hacker app, and remove stuff you don't need; also, starting and shutting down a lot of services not even used by your system takes up a lot of time too.

Did you make sure to upgrade to service pack 3? It probably fixes alot of problems

i think thats what i might need to do.... defrag did nothing for me too.. great.....

yeps.... i am on sp3... everything upgraded, did it as soon as i got it installed

also.... do you think this might be virus related??? i did leave my computer online....... but i do have a router...... @_@ i'm going paranoid again =\

Well I'm stumped. I don't know if this is included with Windows 2000, but enable the fast shudown in the msconfig

My friend has the same problem, his computer takes no less than 3 minutes to shut down. It may be services running or hardware-related, I'm not sure. He doesn't mind though, as he hardly ever shuts down his computer (we leeched net access from him at university so he always kept it on).

yeah... it doesn't have.... shocked me at first...
anyways i fixed the problem..... it had to do with something with the services.... after i disabled some of the stuff its moving faster

iEvolutions I'll just disable some services then, which one should I disable? so far I only stopped Automatci Updates and Messenger

Defragging your harddrive too often can actually slow down your machine, especially if you use the NTFS file system, once a week is more than enough.

i hate my name..... anyways i forgot what services i stopped... so going to attach a scrnshot(zipped) of my disabled and manual services, sorry for inconvience and hope it helps
