Editing MPEG-1 (VCD) Movie
Today I was trying to delete several worthless parts of a MPEG-1 movie that I had. VirtualDub would'nt work because it does not write MPEG-1 files and the avi that it outputs is way too big to fit onto my hard drive. So does anyone know if there is a program that can edit MPEG-1 files without needing to uncompress them?

what? avi bigger than mpg.... BS.
the quality of mpeg 1 movies is the same qulaity and even better (depends on the quality of the original) as a compressed avi (divx), which is super small compared to mpeg.

As an example look at standard 2d pictures saved in jpg format. Everytime you edit an image stored in this format it must recompress the image. However jpg is a lossy compression algorthim meaning that information is delted everytime you recompress. Eventually this leads to a marked reducion in image quality. The way to aviod this is to save it into an uncompressed format (eg bitmap) until you are finished editing, then convert back to jpg. This minimises degredation. The same to true for video editing. Repeated editing/saving causes degredation in picture quality. Hence most pro's use uncompressed video until they are ready to develop the final video.

True, but working with such big files is slower than an underclocked 46

Try My Flix :
http://www.mediawaresolutions.com/products.html It's the easiest way to edit mpeg-1 files. You can also convert VCD back to mpeg-1 files if you want. You should give it a try it's great.

virtualdub can basicly do all that you need really.
as long as you choose the compression right, ofcoz you would need those encoder to be there, but yeah, if you had window media on your pc, then you will had most the file, which include mpg1 file for encoding, hint *.dat on a vcd file is same as *.mpg and you can open it up watching using window media player, |
